Mr. Bowling, an almost black colt by Istan, held off late runs from Z Dager and Shared Property to win the 2012 $175,000 Lecomte Stakes this past Saturday at the Fair Grounds in Horse Racings highlighted race of the weekend.

At the start, Alexander Thegreat took the early lead thru fractions of :23.1 and :47.1 with Hero of Order closely behind him.  It stayed in that order for most of the way around the track.

Turning for home there were 6 or 7 horses with a chance to win but Mr. Bowling, who sent off as the second choice, took over from 57-1 long shot Hero of Order and then was all out to hold off Z Dager, who came up right beside him in late, and Shared Property, who was closing hard down the middle of the track.

“I had a great trip, unbelievable trip,” winning jockey Robby Albarado said. ”I just wanted to give him a chance turning for home. I worked him in the morning. I saw a lot of fight in him. So I figured if I can get him clear turning for home, give him a chance to run home, he would. When that horse ran to him late, he gives him some second effort.”

”To be honest, we thought the colt was just starting to get good,” said trainer Larry Jones, who also trains 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace. ”He’s maturing at the right time. He really showed an affinity for this track when we got down here. I can tell he liked it better than anywhere we’ve been to this point. He pretty well got himself ready. Having Believe You Can, they’ve been work mates, they got each other ready and it paid off.”

The winner paid $9.80 and ran the one mile and 70 yards on the fast dirt was 1:43.2.

Little Bets N Pieces:

*** 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra gave birth to a 125 lb colt by two-time Horse of the Year Curlin on Sunday afternoon. The official time of birth was 2:40pm EST and he recorded his first steps at around 4:10pm

“Rachel is a natural mother, and took to the colt immediately” farm manager Gary Megibben said.

*** Stars Eskendreya, Quality Road and Blame all joined the “first time dads” list recently.

Eskendreya, who was a dominant 9 1/2-length winner of the Wood Memorial and 8 ½ length winner of the Fountain of Youth Stakes, sired his first foal last Friday when a filly was born at Alastar Farms in Kentucky.

Blame, who won 2010 older male champion and Breeders’ Cup Classic, sired a colt that was born last Friday in Pennsylvania.

Multiple grade I winner Quality Road sired his first reported foal last Tuesday. A colt, out of stakes winner Dorm Fever, was foaled at WinStar Farm also in Kentucky.

Quality Road, shown here winning the Woodward at Saratoga, becomes a dad for the first time.

*** Two Year Old Champion Hansen had his last serious work in preparation for the $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes on January 29. The son of Tapit was clocked in :59 4/5.

“We’ve had no bumps in the road,” said trainer Mike Maker, “Hopefully, that trend continues”

Hansen is a "go" in the Holy Bull Stakes this weekend, but I still think they are bringing him back too quickly

*** Over on the work tab: 2011 Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice drilled a half-mile in :47 flat at Palm Meadows Training Center this past Saturday. The four year old gelding is pointing towards his 2012 season debut, which is the $500,000 Donn Handicap on February 11.

Stronach Stable’s undefeated 4-year-old filly Awesome Feather went five furlongs in 1:01 1/5 as she prepares for the $300,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Distaff this Saturday.

Other notable works included Adios Charlie, five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 and is heading to the Sunshine Millions Classic on Saturday, Consortium (five furlongs in 1:01 1/5 for Holy Bull Stakes January 29), Casual Trick (:47 1/5), It’s Tricky (:50 3/5)
