Detroit -- Baseball is a game of imperfections and failure, yet somehow most of that has eluded Max Scherzer this season. Scherzer held the Boston Red Sox to two runs on six hits in a 10-3 Tigers victory Friday night at Comerica Park to become the first Tigers pitcher to win 11 consecutive decisions to start the season. How wowed is Scherzer by what he's done? "Not too much," Scherzer said. "Because I realize it takes so many other teammates to put me in that position. This is a credit to the Detroit Tigers to be in this position. "I know Ive pitched well, and I know Ive given my team a chance to win, but it doesnt always work out that way. To be 11-0 means that everybody else around me has done their job. I couldnt be happier for everybody else." Fine, if Scherzer isn't going to pat himself on the back, it's up to his teammates to do so. "Eleven-and-0 right now is pretty impressive," Torii Hunter said. "If you have that for the season, you're doing really well. I think he has 15-20 more starts or something. "He can go 20-and-something. Maybe 30-0. Can he go 27-0? Right now, he's an alien. Eleven-and-0. That's perfect. Nobody is perfect in baseball. But Max is. That's awesome." Scherzer (11-0, 3.05 ERA, 0.91 WHIP) is also the first pitcher to start 11-0 since Roger Clemens did so in 1997 with the Toronto Blue Jays. While Scherzer didn't know much about George Mullin, the last Tigers pitcher to start a season 11-0 way back in 1909, he has heard of Clemens. "Its nice," Scherzer said about being mentioned with Clemens. "You cant get too caught up in the win-loss record, because it can be fluky at times. My offense has picked me up every single game, and Im going out there and doing my job." Scherzer does have a point. His 7.84 runs of support are the most in baseball. Scherzer seemed happier for Victor Martinez, who had five RBIs, including a grand slam, than he was for himself. "You could tell he was so pumped up to hit that home run, because he knows the context of the game," Scherzer said. "I was pumped up too for him. Gave him a big chest bump." Scherzer also extended his streak of getting at least six strikeouts to 15 straight starts to begin the season. Boston's Pedro Martinez is the only other pitcher to do so, going 15 straight in 1999 and an AL-record 29 straight in 2000, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. It's also impressive that Scherzer was able to do this to the Red Sox, a team that had traditionally had his number. Before Friday, Scherzer was 1-3 with a 9.21 ERA in six career starts against the Red Sox. "This is a real good team, a real good offensive team," manager Jim Leyland said. "Very good baseball team, that's why they're leading the East right now. Those are tough outs. I thought he did a terrific job." Eight of the nine Red Sox batters came into the game hitting .262 or better and four were hitting over .300. "First time he threw fastballs and after that he started throwing curves and sliders," Jarrod Saltalamacchia said. "He's got good stuff. He stayed out of the middle of the plate and made it tough for us." Now Scherzer is going to make it tough on his fans. One fan was shown on the scoreboard with "11-0" shaved into his head. Scherzer didn't see it, but he appreciated the vote of confidence. "Thats a great haircut," Scherzer said. "I wonder if he can edge that 11 into a 2, help me out a little bit. Maybe put it somewhere else, a 12. Its fun when the fans get into it, get behind you. Just means theyre fans of the Detroit Tigers."
