Rich Aurilia told Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle that San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has lost 17 pounds this winter.

"When I saw him he looked great. He really did," said Aurilia. "I think his mindset -- hopefully -- has changed in a sense that he knows what's at stake not only for the team, but his own individual health and career. That's where the maturity process has to come, when you as an individual have to decide to do whatever you can to help your team and help yourself."
Sandoval has been working with Giants head trainer Dave Groeschner at Triple Threat Performance in Tempe. The place is a haven for professional athletes who need a "boot camp" style approach to changing their workout and eating habits.

Of course, there were similar reports about Sandoval last winter, but he deviated from his diet and came to spring training overweight.

I'll go ahead and file this post under "cautiously optimistic."
