The Pittsburgh Pirates finished the 2011 season with an estimated 40-man payroll of $53,441,206, according to Pirates Prospects calculations.  The estimate is based on all announced salaries, estimated salaries, pro-rated salaries based on how much time players spent in the majors and minors, performance bonuses, signing bonuses, and any other contract details that have been made available.

In 2010 the Pirates Prospects estimate was $1.36 M short of the actual results.  The reason for the difference is mostly due to a lack of information on performance bonuses and actual salaries for most of the league minimum players.  The 2011 estimate is about $9 M more than what the Pirates officially spent in 2010.  Below are the details.

The payroll projection on Opening Day was $42,583,500, which means the Pirates added over $10.8 M in payroll during the 2011 season.  A few of the big expenses during the season:

  • The Pirates added about $5.5 M to their payroll when they traded for Derrek Lee and Ryan Ludwick at the trade deadline.
  • Another boost came when they signed Jose Tabata to an extension, awarding him a $1 M signing bonus in the process.
  • The September call-ups added an additional $565 K.
  • The in-season additions of Xavier Paul, Brandon Wood, Mike McKenry, Matt Pagnozzi, and Jason Grilli added about $1.2 M to the payroll.
The payroll total is the highest since 2003, when the Pirates finished the year with a $62,314,723 payroll.

The Pittsburgh Pirates enter the 2011-12 off-season with ten players eligible for arbitration, including five players who are first time eligible.  The decisions to be made are interesting. 2011 breakout players Jeff Karstens and Charlie Morton will both be eligible for arbitration.  All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan will be eligible for his second year, and could see a significant...

Pirates Have Money to Spend This Off-Season

Earlier today I posted the early look at the 2012 Pittsburgh Pirates 40-man roster and payroll.  The current estimates, which are far from complete, show that the Pirates are around $30 M, based on the projected decisions with option years, arbitration decisions, and non-tender candidates.  The question is, how much do the Pirates have that they can spend?  A quick look at that...

Robbie Grossman off to fast start in AFL

That’s what ESPN’s Keith Law said after Robbie Grossman homered today in the 2nd game of the Arizona Fall League season. So far in two AFL games, Grossman is hitting .556/.600/1.222 with 2 HR in 9 AB. There’s been a lot said about Grossman recently as he was surprisingly left off Baseball America’s Top 20 Prospects of the Florida State League list. A lot of...

Should the Pirates Trade Pedro Alvarez?

The Rockies could be looking at Pedro Alvarez. Troy Renck of the Denver Post reported today that the Colorado Rockies will be searching for a new third baseman in 2012, and will be casting a wide net.  Renck mentions Pedro Alvarez in his list of the intriguing, and mentions that the team inquired on him in trade talks for Ian Stewart at the trade deadline, but received no interest...

Alex Presley is a Top International League Prospect

Baseball America released their top 20 prospects for the 2011 International League today, with Alex Presley being the lone Pittsburgh Pirates prospect on the list.  Presley came in at number 18, and his scouting report can be seen here by subscribers. Presley has been a big surprise the last two years.  After his breakout performance in 2010 there were questions as to whether he...

Pirates: Stetson Allie Season Review

When the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted pitcher Stetson Allie in the second round of the 2010 MLB Draft, they knew they were selecting a pitcher with first-round talent who fell to them because of perceived signability issues. They also realized they were drafting a pitcher who wasn’t quite as polished as first overall selection Jameson Taillon (check out Taillon’s season...

Arizona Fall League Recap: 10/5

For the second time in as many games, Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Robbie Grossman homered, going 3-for-5 in the second game of the season.  His solo homer was in his first at-bat of the game, and according to Keith Law, it was a loud shot that came opposite field on a 94 MPH fastball.  Grossman is 5-for-9 with two homers in his first two games in the AFL. Jarek Cunningham also...

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that Todd Tomczyk (pronounced “TOM-zick”) has been hired as the team’s Head Athletic Trainer.  We heard earlier in the week that the Pirates had fired head athletic trainer Brad Henderson. Arizona Fall League Recap: 10/7

The Mesa Solar Sox lost 4-3 to Salt River today, giving up the losing run in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Robbie Grossman extended his hitting streak to four games, going 1-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI.  Jarek Cunningham got his first hit of the AFL season, hitting a two run homer in the second inning for his only hit of the day.  The homer gave Mesa a 2-0 lead, which...

Pirates hire new trainer

This was announced yesterday, but I wanted to mention that the Pirates have hired Bethel Park native Todd Tomczyk as their new trainer. He was with the Dodgers as an assistant trainer but prior to that he was employed by (surprise!) the Indians as a trainer in their minor league system. He's a fellow Duquesne alum, so obviously he's awesome and no one will ever get hurt on...

Bucs minor league player of the year Robbie Grossman homered in the first game. ROOT Sports’ ratings for Pirates’ games this year increased dramatically, going up 49.1% to 4.89. The increase was the third highest...

2011 Pittsburgh Pirates Redux – Firstbase Edition

Alright the season has been over long enough for me to basically take all emotions of the pathetic end out.  So what I’m going to do is review the Pirates 2011 season by position and say what I think needs to be done about them. We are going to start with Firstbase.  This position looks [...]
