With Spring Training in just a couple of short months, I think it’s time to do a mid-offseason preview of the team if nothing changes right between now and February. Every week, I’ll preview one position group for the next month, projecting stats, impact, and what it means for the team in the future. 1B #24 Mat Gamel (Age 26) 2011 (AAA): .310 BA, 28 HR, 96 RBI, .376 OBP, .498 SLUG 2012 Projected: .285 BA, 18 HR, 70 RBI, .325 OBP, .435 SLUG Gamel will finally get his chance, barring a trade or free agent signing of a veteran, to see what he can do as an everyday major league player. Once considered “untouchable” by Doug Melvin, Gamel has been incredibly productive in every level of the minor leagues, highlighted by a starting nod in the Futures game in 2008, but as a third baseman. He can hit the ball to all fields, but isn’t a great power hitter. Very similar to Michael Cuddyer as a hitter, 20-25 home runs seems to be his maximum potential in the major...

MILWAUKEE The Milwaukee Brewers signed two players, infielder Cesar Izturis and left-hander Juan Perez, to minor league contracts Wednesday with invitations to Spring Training in 2012. Izturis spent the last three seasons with Baltimore where he hit .240 with 27 doubles and 59 RBI. In his 11-season career which included stints with Toronto, the Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals and Pirates...

Top 15 Prospects: Milwaukee Brewers

Pitching is definitely the strength of the Milwaukee Brewers system. The organization has amassed an impressive group of arms in just the past two seasons. The club scored on two pitchers – Tyler Thornburg and Jimmy Nelson – in 2010 that many thought would crash and burn as starters in pro ball after flip-flopping between the rotation and bullpen in college. They then...

Merry Christmas from John Axford

I actually think one of my favorite things about Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford isn't the award-winning mustache he cultivated throughout this past season...it's that he has a pretty good sense of humor about himself. Can you think of another pro athlete on Twitter that would "Elf" himself and share the results to his 38,000 closest friends?I can't.Click...

Betancourt returns to Royals with 1-year deal

Yuniesky Betancourt is back with the Kansas City Royals after agreeing to a one-year contract. The deal was announced Tuesday. Betancourt, who played for the Royals from 2009-10, started at shortstop for the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers last season, batting .252 with 13 homers and 68 RBIs. Kansas City has Alcides Escobar at shortstop, so Betancourt will provide versatility...

Why Teams May Be Hesitant to Sign Prince Fielder

As much as Prince Fielder hates to admit it he will always be linked to his father, Cecil Fielder. Both players hit with tremendous power and racked up RBIs. Prince is clearly the better baseball player by far and away but over a three year stretch his father was the best in the business. There are probably several reasons why Prince has yet to sign with a baseball team such as years...

Market slow to develop for Prince Fielder

Prince Fielder takes center stage

Prince Fielder is the last high profile free agent left on the market. Pujols, Wilson, Reyes, and now Darvish have all found new homes. Now Prince and his agent Scott Boras take baseball’s center stage in the search for a new fifedom. The Cubs interest in Fielder remains unclear. The Mariners have reportedly make an initial offer to the slugging first baseman. The Texas...

Brewers sign Izturis, Perez to minor-league deals

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee Brewers have signed infielder Cesar Izturis and left-hander Juan Perez to minor-league contracts with invitations to spring training.

Prince Fielder Rumors: Friday

Yesterday we heard that Scott Boras is "gunning for" an average annual salary of $25.5MM for free agent Prince Fielder, which would be just above the $25.4MM annual payout Albert Pujols received from the Angels. Fielder also wants a ten-year deal, though a number of clubs are interested in a six-year pact. We'll keep track of any news about the slugger right here...
