Stephen Strasburg had several critical flaws in his delivery. The sad truth is that everyone was so impressed with his velocity, amazing command of multiple pitches, and his successful results that they were blind to the dangers not visible to the naked eye.
Could Steven Strasburg’s injury been prevented?
•Absolutely
•But only if he had a high speed biomechanical analysis
Al Leiter, a former Major League pitcher for 19 years and current analyst for MLB Network and YES Network had a strong reaction when the news of Strasburg’s injury was announced. “When the news came out that Stephen Strasburg needed Tommy John surgery I was saddened and frustrated. Here is another promising pitcher destroyed by poor mechanics. I am on a crusade to help pitchers of all ages stay healthy,” stated Leiter, who is also an advisor for 3P Sports.
“The brutal fact is that while Stephen Strasburg was amazing crowds everywhere, he had significant and critical flaws in his mechanics. Flaws that may end his career. I have done several interviews over the last week with ESPN, MLB Network, the NY Times, etc and they all asked the same questions. How could this happen?,” asked Leiter, “The answer is simple. It happens all the time. Pitchers develop flaws. The flaws accelerate injury. Find the flaws and fix the flaws. Arm issues will drop like a well placed sinker ball.”
Here is an example of a Strasburg flaw. On the left is Stephen Strasburg and on the right is a healthy pitcher as captured by 3P Sports Biomechanical Pitching Analysis. Notice how Strasburg’s right elbow is pointing to the sky when his stride foot hits the ground. This is a major flaw.
The Peak Performance Range for the elbow angle at foot contact is 70 – 100 degrees.
The photo on the right shows results within the peak performance range. This photo shows the proper arm position when the stride foot hits the ground. Strasburg’s arm position – elbow towards the sky – put severe stress on his shoulder and elbow. It was only a matter of time before he would breakdown and have a serious injury.
This is only one measurement in the pitching delivery that can cause injury. In Strasburg’s case it’s the most revealing and likely the reason Tommy John Surgery was necessary.
Through 3P’s partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB) and American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), they provide the same scientific pitching analysis used by hundreds of MLB and amateur pitchers to improve their mechanics to throw harder and avoid career ending injuries. Pitchers like Cliff Lee, CC Sabathia, Barry Zito, and many more have had this biomechanical analysis done to protect themselves.
Leiter is a believer in a biomechanical analysis for a good reason; it saved his career. “I played 19 seasons in the big leagues. I threw a no hitter, won two World Series rings and played on two all star teams. I played for the Marlins, Blue Jays, Mets and Yankees. I tell you this because my career almost ended because of an injury. At that time, I had a biomechanical analysis and saw the flaws that led to my injury. Luckily, I was able to correct the flaws post surgery. My career then took off. I was lucky…when Dr. James Andrews did this analysis on me I was amazed. None of my prior coaches could see my mechanical flaws with the naked eye. And some of those coaches are Hall of Fame candidates. The ASMI data told the entire story,” stated Leiter.
Together with some of baseball’s greatest pitching minds the team at 3P Sports has made available to everyone the same scientific pitching analysis that MLB stars pay thousands of dollars to receive each season. 3P Sports incorporates Dr Andrews’ ASMI technology without having players go to his pitching lab in Birmingham Alabama. They’ve found a way to keep it inexpensive. Their goal is to have every pitcher in America analyzed to determine where their injury and performance flaws are and then give them the drills that correct each flaw. Most importantly, 3P Sports will keep pitchers healthy.
It’s a simple three step process:
1. Video the pitcher from two angles
2. Send the video to 3P Sports
3. Review your personal biomechanical pitching analysis and follow the drills 3P recommends
“I hope you send this page link to everyone you know that pitches, is a parent of a pitcher or coaches pitchers. We have to let the pitching world know there is now a way for every pitcher…from little league to the big leagues…to identify where their injury and performance flaws are and how to correct them,” said Leiter.
