In baseball's modern era (marked by the rise of the American League and the solidifying of the rules in 1901), the Pittsburgh Pirates have won at least 90 games in the following seasons: 1901, 1902, 1903, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1912, 1921, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1944, 1960, 1962, 1965, 1966, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 2013.  Here's one thing I love about this: with the exception of 1944 (which was a war year and thus a bit of an outlier), I can look at any year on this list and tell you who the best players on any one of those given Pirate teams was (1921 is the trickiest of the group because Kiki Cuyler and Pie Traynor were both on the team, but young and not really contributors -- still Max Carey was the team's most valuable position player). The Pirates have a long and storied history, and these teams represent approximately the top fifth of all Pirate teams in history. For the longest time, it felt like the great moments in Pirate...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Did A.J. Burnett make his last start at PNC Park?

A.J. Burnett (Photo Courtesy of Jonathan Daniel/ Getty Images) For the Pittsburgh Pirates, acquiring A.J.Burnett nineteen months ago from the New York Yankees was a blessing. On Saturday night in front of a sold out PNC Park, Burnett shined in what may have been his last regular season home game in a Pirates uniform. There is no doubt that Burnett has been a key part of the Pirates...

Pirates playoff bound after win

The Pittsburgh Pirates are headed to the playoffs for the first time in 21 years, clinching at least a National League wild card Monday night when they beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 and the Washington Nationals lost to St. Louis. It will be Pittsburgh's first trip to the postseason since Barry Bonds, Jim Leyland and Co. won three straight NL East titles from 1990-92. Bonds then...

Farnsworth grabs opportunity

Veteran right-handed reliever Kyle Farnsworth was a late season call up by the Pirates after signing a minor league deal and pitching at Triple A Indianapolis. Farnsworth's recent success bodes well for the Pirates, and he may be a valuable, addition to the bullpen. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Farnsworth recently.

Pirates earn at least a wild card spot with 2-1 win over Cubs

Starling Marte delivered the knockout blow Monday night but it also served as the ultimate bailout. After clinging to a one-run lead all night thanks to exceptional pitching by Charlie Morton the Pirates' bullpen allowed the Chicago Cubs to tie it. Marte who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning hit a tie-breaking home run to give the Pirates a 2...

Pirates fall to Cubs, blunting NL Central hopes

The Pittsburgh Pirates' hopes of catching up in the NL Central took a big hit Wednesday when Darnell McDonald launched a three-run homer, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 4-2 win. With three games remaining in the regular season for each team, the Pirates trail division-leading St. Louis by three games. The Pirates, who already have clinched a playoff spot, hold a one-game lead...

Game 158: Pirates 8 Cubs 2

If you were at all concerned that the Pirates were going to be hung over on Tuesday after celebrating their wild card clinching win on Monday night, those notions were put to rest fairly early in this one. After going down in order in the first inning, the Pirates scored three times in the second inning thanks to a Marlon Byrd single, a Gaby Sanchez walk, a Pedro Alvarez RBI double...

Game 159: Cubs 4 Pirates 2

In the course of about three hours this afternoon, the Pirates managed to more or less guarantee that they'll be in next Tuesday's wild card game, and prove why such a game is so terrifying.  What happened this afternoon was that the Pirates didn't hit very well (a recurring theme) and Francisco Liriano didn't quite have his best stuff. It seemed like that was...

mlboffseason: oldtimefamilybaseball: I recently bought a “Me and the Boys Boppin” tee to support the Pittsburgh Pirates in their battle for a 163rd game. When it arrived and I put it on, I felt a strange power surge through me, one that imbued me with the quickness of the cobra and the strength of one thousand mortal men. I’m guessing it was the particular blend of polyester...

Game 159: Pirates vs. Cubs Recap

Source: FanGraphs Even now that they are good, the Pittsburgh Pirates refuse to do anything the easy way. Coming into this afternoon’s game, they had a chance to sweep the Cubs. Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs – Game 159

I want to thank the Pirates for last night’s win.  Yesterday I said this, I’ll take any win we can get, I’m just so tired of these crazy nail biters. Thanks for giving me what I wanted!!!!! Francisco Liriano will get his last start before the playoffs today. He’s likely going in the one game…

The “Not-So-Wild” Card

This weekend in MLB, the Pittsburgh Pirates visit the Cincinnati Reds in a pivotal 3 game series to close out the season – with the NL Wild Card berth on the line! Wait, hold on…. nevermind. They’re both in?  And they’re probably playing Tuesday in a one-game “playoff”?  Well then, that puts a damper on […]
