Today in Oakland, my cellar-dwelling (43-58, 17.5 out in the AL West) fading favorite team did a useful little fire sale trade, by sending Orlando Cabrera to the Twins for prospects. (What did they get? What does it matter? The last time Billy Beane won a trade was three Michael Lewis books ago. But O-Cab is old, so, um, young guys. Yay, trade.)Rather than give the now open job to no one's idea of a shortstop in the ancient and inadequate Nomar Garciaparra (.688 OPS) or the truly horrible Bobby Crosby (.637 OPS), the team decided to bring up former first-round pick Cliff Pennington, who probably isn't a major-leage player either, but is, at least, younger and with the possibility of hope. Here, for the record, is Crosby's reaction."It's an absolute joke." Um, Bobby? A little clarity here. Would the joke be how you have somehow managed to suck out 2,342 career ABs with a .306 on-base percentage for an organization that used to, well, value guys that got on b...

Twins Acquire Orlando Cabrera
In what was almost a foregone conclusion as of this morning, the Twins have agreed to terms with the Oakland Athletics regarding shortstop Orlando Cabrera.
Cabrera, 34, has been one of the league’s hottest hitters this past month and should fit in to the two-hole nicely. He’ll be a decent upgrade offensively over both Nick Punto [...]
More AL Central Spin: Orlando Cabrera to the Twins

Twins get Orlando Cabrera
The Oakland A's have traded Orlando Cabrera to Minnesota for shortstop prospect Tyler Ladendorf. Ladendorf was a second rounder last summer, but he hasn't hit much yet as a professional at levels that he should handle as a college draftee. He's currently at the Low A level. Cabrera isn't a stud, but as Rosenthal mentions, the Twins are getting zilch offensively from...
A hot July for A's Cabrera
With a first-inning single Wednesday, Orlando Cabrera became the first A's player to enjoy a 40-hit month since Mark Kotsay in September 2004.
Billy Beane's Latest Trade Proves His Genius Is All But Gone
Billy Beane is done!
After his latest trade it seems that he has lost it. He's so enamored with finding prospects that he has done nothing to help the young A's grow!
The latest trade was sending Orlando Cabrera to the Minnesota Twins.
Now, what did the A's get in return from the Twins? A low level prospect who's batting .233 since being promoted from the Rookie Leagues...

Analysis of Peavy to White Sox, Cabrera to Twins, and Johnson to Marlins
While the Boston Red Sox were busy trading for Victor Martinez, the Chicago White Sox were busy trying to acquire San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy. The White Sox had one hurdle to climb: for the deal to be completed he would have to approve the trade, the same trade he rejected this past offseason. This time, Peavy, under contract through the 2013 season, approved the trade, realizing...
Orlando Cabrera No Help for Minnesota Twins
With just a couple of hours left at the trading deadline, Bill Smith struck a deal with A's GM Billy Beane to acquire shortstop Orlando Cabrera for, the 21-year-old shortstop prospect, Tyler Ladendorf.
Ladendorf was a high-ceiling, high-risk prospect with just over 300 professional plate appearances. Beane also paid cash to seal the deal.
It's unlikely...
A's Rumors: Garciaparra, Springer, Crosby
Susan Slusser at the San Francisco Chronicle says that the A's will be pressed to make a roster move upon the return of Jason Giambi this Tuesday, though it's unclear what the move will be. She notes that the A's essentially have five first basemen on their roster and wonders if one could be traded.Slusser suggests that Nomar Garciaparra could generate some interest as...
