Things looked bleak for the Phillies early on Tuesday night at Wrigley with J.A. Happ dancing around trouble and working deep into counts while Rich Harden was dealing with perfection through five. But the Phillies never rolled over, Happ recovered, and Harden unraveled rather quickly, giving up a walk to Ruiz and a subsequent homer to J-Roll to put the Phillies right back in it.

Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol got wild and walked in the Phillies go-ahead run to set Brad Lidge up for the save. As Brad Lidge seems to like to do lately, he failed, allowing the Cubs to tie the game back up and head into extras. The Phillies bats remained dormant through extras except for one fine swing by Ben Francisco, making Ruben Amaro Jr. grin just a little bit wider.

It certainly wasn't a pretty win by any stretch, but Happ performed well, and the 'pen gave them a chance to win, after they blew it of course. But the bats and Lidge are surely keeping Phillies fans with dreams of a repeat up at night.

Alas, they won. As did the Fish to keep their same distance. Big game tonight for Pedro and the boys.

Try to forget about Lidge for a while and enjoy Benny Fresh's solo shot in all its game winning glory.

Francisco’s Homer Lifts Lidge

It was fitting that Ben Francisco caught Alfonso Soriano’s fly ball to end the game. After all, Francisco played hero by picking up the pieces for an offense that continued to struggle with runners in scoring position, and a closer that failed at a save attempt. The Cubs were the first to get on the board. [...]

Should Brad Lidge Still Be the Philadelphia Phillies Closer?

It's a sight that's become all too familiar for Phillies fans this season: Brad Lidge walking off the mound after a blown save. Lidge recorded his seventh blown save of 2009 on Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley, but fortunately didn't record his fifth loss. Ben Francisco made up for the righty closer's struggles by homering in the top of the 12th to...
