Did you guess Brian McCann? How about Chipper Jones? Martin Prado? What about Adam LaRoche? Okay, it was actually LaRoche, but the guy who ranked second was David Ross with an .888 OPS. For all of our decent or good offensive players, David Ross was the second best hitter on the team.
Ross' good patience at the plate was complimented by his excellent power. His 7 homeruns rank second in the majors for any player with 160 or fewer at-bats. Add to that his 48% caught stealing rate (19 CS in 40 ATT) and he was truly the best backup catcher in baseball. And he may be the best backup catcher the Braves have ever had. Eddie Perez might have had a better offensive year in 1998 (.941 OPS), but Eddie wasn't as good at throwing out runners as Ross was. Eddie had a 29% CS% that year, w...

Free Agent at the End of the Season: Rafael Soriano
When you think of dominant closers, Rafael Soriano is generally not a name that comes to mind. However, if Soriano is able to consistently put up big numbers like he did in 2009, then he will have to be in the discussion. When Soriano is healthy, he's a fantastic relief pitcher. But like so many other relief pitchers, Soriano has battled injuries throughout his career, which...
Nelson Cruz to the Braves?
The Braves are still looking for a right handed power hitter. How's this idea? Nelson Cruz to the Braves:"Anyway, here’s a name that I think will come up next week: Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz. Yes, the guy that our own Coach (of the blog, or at least he used to be, haven’t seen him around much lately) suggested Cruz as the answer a year ago. If the Braves had traded...
LaRoche will cost in years...
There are really only five starting 1B options through free agency; the often injured Nick Johnson, the aging and injured Carlos Delgado, Journeyman off a career year Russell Branyan, struggling Hank Blalock and Adam LaRoche...Of course, the Mets could get creative, as I suggested with Kevin Kouzmanoff or they could make a trade. But of course, Omar considers his prospects precious...
Braves 2009 Season in Review: Brian McCann
More photos » by Gregory Smith - AP Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann... a slugger? Browse more photos » They say that every player is affected to some degree by where he bats in the lineup, and it seems that the slugger's mentality of the cleanup spot began to sink into Brian McCann as the season went along. The common generalization about McCann is that he...
This Guy Is Playing Golf Right Now: Javier Vazquez
As the playoffs and award season gets underway, we want to take a gander at some players who had outstanding seasons in 2009 but whose teams ended up just shy of making the postseason and who will (most likely) not pick up any fancy trophies. Quite a consolation prize: a round of golf and a write-up on a low circulation sports blog.
Previously, Russell Branyan, Ben Zobrist, Adam...
