Brett Myers was overpowering, in his two-inning rehab stint on Wednesday night. On one hand, Myers was facing AA hitters. On the other hand, Myers pitched two scoreless innings, threw seventeen of twenty-four pitches for strikes, utilized a 92 MPH fastball to whiff five (of seven) batters, and will be appearing in both the R-Phils' and P-Phils' Championship Parades. Myers needs to pitch on consecutive days this weekend, and then he should be ready to join the P-Phils' bullpen on Tuesday, Roster Expansion Day! GM Ruben Amaro indicated that the Phillies wouldn't be make any more acquisitions, prior to Sept. 1st. The cagey Amaro is, definitely, going to pick up a bench bat. The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA) pounded the Rochester Red Wings on Thursday, 11-2. With the game tied 2-2, heading into the eighth inning, the FeHogs exploded for a three-run eighth, and a six-run ninth. Starter Kyle Kendrick pitched seven and two-thirds innings, permitting only two runs (seven hits, zero walks/one whiff). The Reading Phillies (AA) lost an epic game to the rival Erie Seawolves, 9-6, in thirteen innings. Four hours and twenty-nine minutes, in front of 6915 rabid fans, against the team chasing them for the final playoff spot. The R-Phils trailed 6-2, after three innings, but scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, eighth, and ninth innings. Neil Sellers had four hits, including a homer and a double. Kevin Nelson had (another!) home run, and four RBI. Starter Mike Stutes surrendered six runs, in only five innings (seven hits, two walks/four whiffs). The R-Phils' bullpen (Alex Concepcion, Pat Overholt, Mike Zagurski, Sergio Escalona) combined for seven scoreless innings, until Escalona was touched for three runs (two earned) in his third inning of work. The R-Phils lead Erie by a game and a half. Bowie is three games behind Reading, with a four-game series between the two scheduled this weekend. Vance Worley, Yohan Flande, Kyle Drabek, and Mike Cisco are lined up to make the starts, and Brett Myers may be available out of the bullpen. The Clearwater Threshers (A) lost to the Brevard County Manatees on Thursday, 7-2. Those Sea Cows are too tough. Clearwater had five hits...and five errors. Starter Darren Byrd permitted five runs (four hits, six walks/two walks), in five innings. The Threshers, and the IronPigs, are pretty much playing out the string. All of our minor league focus should be on Reading right now.

August 28 Game Recap: Phillies 4, Braves 2

What happened? Jamie Moyer earned his second win out of the bullpen as the Phils took game one of the series to move to eight games in front of the Braves and the Florida Marlins. Who did what? Pedro Martinez (ND) pitched two scoreless frames of one hit ball. He walked and struck out one. Ryan Howard went 3 [...]

Hilariously, The Phillies Still Have Faith In Brad Lidge

Right now the Philadelphia Phillies are standing by their closer Brad Lidge. Which is hilarious, considering Lidge currently has a 0-6 record, an astronomical 7.33 ERA, gigantic 1.80 WHIP and nine blown saves in 34 chances. Last season Lidge had a career resurgence, going a perfect 41-for-41 on save opportunities, with a minuscule 1.95 ERA. He [...]

Back to the Lecture at Hand: Phils, Braves, Elements?

I can't really think of a time I was more proud of a 3 ER loser to a last place team on the brink of relegation (if there in fact were relegation in MLB) than I was of JA Happ last night. Sure, it sucks the Phillies lost a series to the Pirates, but his clear displeasure at taking the L showed that this team still totally gives a **** about its remaining schedule despite being up...

The Dip: Chase Utley – Greatest Phillie of All Time?

This is The Dip, a weekly column penned by our own commenter, The Dipsy. Agree or disagree with what he says? Tell us by leaving your comments. When we think of the greatest players of all time we shouldn’t go by pure stats for often they leave a canvas half painted.  There have always been players [...]

Ted Keith: Best 1-2 pitching punches today

To see Cole Hamels last October was to see an ace, and, it seemed, a fully-formed one destined for many years in that role. In pitching the Phillies to their first world championship in 28 years, the 24-year-old Hamels authored a brilliant postseason in which he was named both NLCS and World Series MVP to firmly establish himself as one of the game's premier pitchers.

Deep-Lee

Garrett Anderson hits a home run off Cliff Lee, the first Lee allows with the Phillies. The three run shot gives Atlanta a 3-1 lead. It’s the most runs Lee has allowed with the Phillies.

Gameday: Braves (67-61) at Phillies (74-52)

Atlanta Braves (67-61) at Philadelphia Phillies (74-52) Derek Lowe (12-8, 4.48 ERA) vs. Cliff Lee (12-9, 2.63 ERA) Time: 7:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park Weather: Fair, 68 TV: MY PHL 17 Twitter: Phillies Nation Don’t be surprised if a pitcher’s duel breaks out tonight.  With Derek Lowe and Cliff Lee on the mound, it’s probably going to be a low scoring game. Lee will be aiming [...]

Recap: Philadelphia vs. Atlanta

Ryan Howard had another awesome display of power, clubbing a pair of homers, as the Philadelphia Phillies held off Atlanta, 4-2, at a soggy Citizens Bank Park.

Jason Knapp to Undergo MRI on Shoulder

When the Cleveland Indians traded Cliff Lee to the Philadelphia Phillies before the deadline it was a tough pill for Indians fans to swallow. For the second straight season a team that was supposed to contend for a division title traded the ace of their rotation. The Tribe got four players in return for Lee from Philadelphia, but the key to the deal was 18-year old right-hander Jason Knapp...

Woodie Fryman: Forgotten Hero of the 1972 Detroit Tigers

He was a tobacco farmer, really. And how many of them play big league baseball? But Woodie Fryman might have been thinking that his days of a full-time purveyor of tobacco were drawing near, as he languished as the black sheep of the Philadelphia Phillies’ rotation in the summer of 1972. It’s a “What have you done for me lately?” business, pro sports is. Often, it’s lately...
