According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, citing 'major-league sources,' the Mets and 2B Luis Castillo are close to agreeing to a four-year, $25 million contract. The Astros, Nationals, and Cubs all had expressed interest in Castillo, whom the Mets acquired from the Twins at the non-waiver deadline for two minor leaguers. Four years might be considered a risky move with Carlos Baerga, Roberto Alomar, and Edgardo Alfonzo as our previous 2nd basemen, but this was our only way to retain him. Castillo has proven he can play and succeed here. (unlike Eckstein who wanted more money and had a shaky 2006 season) So let's hope the recently 'repaired' knees hold up!

Reality Check

I've been writing a lot of real long posts the last couple of weeks. I like doing it, but sometimes it's nice to make a simple point that doesn't require quite so many words. I've written about Luis Castillo fairly extensively, and I think most of us are in agreement that Minaya gave him too many years in the contract he signed. The odds of Castillo being worth...

Opinion: Luis Castillo Will Be Traded

This morning, on his blog at ESPN.com, Buster Olney writes, The Mets also have quietly continued to gauge the market for Luis Castillo, and if they find a taker for at least some of his salary, that would leave them in position to pursue Orlando Hudson, who also is being courted by the Washington Nationals. This is about the fourth or fifth time I've read a rumor like this...

Castillo leading off...

Not only might we be stuck with Luis Castillo but Jerry Manuel suggested that he may use him as the lead-off hitter to get the beleaguered player going. I still think the team will explore every alternative to move him and if they can't, they will sign someone who they can plug immediately into ...

Coming into Spring Training, everybody has pointed out someone who has something to prove to the organization and to the fan Luis Castillo has been the number one player mentioned followed closely by Ryan Church and Daniel Murphy. For awhile, even I had to agree. I wrote endless blogs ...

Mets Want Orlando Hudson To Replace Luis Castillo

As reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, The Mets are desperate to move second baseman Luis Castillo to create a spot for free agent Orlando Hudson. The only way to do it would be to exchange Castillo's contract for another of similar value, but lots of luck. When the Mets asked the Rangers about a Castillo-for-Vicente Padilla -- a swap that would require the Rangers to...

Castillo & the bench....

Luis Castillo appears to be the Mets 2B to start spring training, how long he maintains that position all depends on how sincere his re-commitment is and who's behind him.The positive is that Castillo has a history, he was once a gold glove caliber 2B and a premier tablesettter. He has dedicated ...

Mets Non Tender Reyes, Burgos

The Mets have non-tendered reliever Ambiorix Burgos and second baseman, Argenis Reyes. I expected the Mets to part company with Burgos, especially after the hit and run car accident in the Dominican Republic that left two women dead. Burgos is expected to get major jail time when the authorities are done with him. Non-tendering Argenis Reyes, actually came as a big surprise to me...

Reyes Batting Third Makes Sense

As seen on NY Mets GlobalJoseph Del Grippo of Bleacher Report had an interesting article yesterday about why Jose Reyes is best suited to bat third. Among his biggest reasons were the facts that Luis Castillo has a better obp than Jose, he has led the team in hits each of the last three years, ...

Why Not Fonzi?

Remember the good 'ole days when the New York Mets had "The Best Infield Ever" as described by a cover on Sports Illustrated?Remember who made up that infield?John Olerud, 1B; Edgardo Alfonzo, 2B; Rey Ordóñez, SS; and Robin Ventura, 3B. No other team could compete with that. The combination of number 13 and number 10 alone was incredible. How about bringing back some...

Omar Minaya Addresses Our Concerns

This morning at 8:05 AM, Omar Minaya was a guest of Boomer and Carton on WFAN. Carton asked Omar to address the fans' desire for Manny Ramirez.
