Chapman clearly has incredible skill, as does Washington’s number one pick Stephen Strasburg. Both have superb repetoires and tremendous up-sides, but before we concentrate on that, let me tell a story.
There was a segment from the Dan Patrick Show years ago where I remember former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon sharing his thoughts on “can’t miss” prospects.
McMahon reminisced about a rookie offensive lineman who’d been drafted by the Bears, a young behemoth with all the physical gifts in the world — strength, size, athleticism. The “can’t miss”...

Former Expos manager Felipe Alou, commenting on the sorry state of the Nationals in the Montreal Gazette:

Stephen Strasburg wins Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball player of the year
Former San Diego State right-hander Stephen Strasburg, the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Washington Nationals last month, has been selected as the winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball's player of the year.
Detwiler is dinged again
When Ross Detwiler has a bad outing, the left-hander's synopsis more often than not comes down to his fastball, and specifically, where in his delivery he's releasing it. Through a year and a half in the minor leagues and a menagerie of promise and pratfalls in nine big league starts, Detwiler's success has been defined mostly by how well he can get his fastball sinking...

Acta pep talk reminds team of its potential
With the Washington Nationals in the middle of another losing stretch, manager Manny Acta called his players together for a meeting Friday afternoon designed to coax the team out of the funk. The meeting lasted five minutes. No players or coaches spoke, Acta said, and the message was the one Acta usually employs in team meetings: reminding players they're better than what they...

Rizzo Has No Plan For A Firesale
Chico Harlan of The Washington Post spoke to Nationals acting GM Mike Rizzo today, who says "he feels no obligation to conduct a firesale," playing down the possibility of a major shakeup before the trade deadline.
"A big transition period? I don't think that," Rizzo said. "We'll make deals based on good baseballs decision. 'Firesale'...
