When Ryan Howard jacked his majestic 3-run pinch hit homerun to put the Phils ahead on Saturday night, I had the next day's headline ready to go- "From Hospital to Hero". Much to my dismay Ryan Madson came in and became the goat. Things haven't been going too well in PhillieLand lately. With the way they're playing, it's hard to stay positive, but I offer these nuggets of joy: 1) Every team goes through bad stretches like this in a season, even championship seasons. 2) It sucks that Raul is out, but at least Mayberry, Stairs, and Dobbs are getting some much needed at bats. 3) Ryan Madson has sucked as closer, but this fits in perfectly with the return of Brad Lidge because fans actually want him back in that role now. 4) Jimmy Rollins is not a career altering slump, he's merely having a horrible 1st half like Pat Burrell (2007) and Ryan Howard (2008) had before going Yahtzee in the 2nd half. 5) Despite sucking at home and playing their worst baseb...

Baseball According to Chris Wheeler

According to Chris Wheeler preserving a lead in the 9th inning is difficult; in his words, "closing is tough." He continually blurts this mindless crap over and over again as Phils fans endure numerous blown saves by Brad Lidge and now Ryan Madson. If closing is so damn tricky, then please tell me how Jose Mesa has 321 career saves. Shut the f*ck up Wheels!Phillies are...

Why Madson was the Setup Man

The Phillies move of Ryan Madson to the closer role with Brad Lidge on the disabled list doesn’t seem to be working out very well. In his last three appearances he’s been charged with a blown save, a loss, and Saturday night picked up both. He’s allowed five earned runs in his last [...]

Phillie Phloppage

ESPN contributor Jayson Stark is a Philly boy and a fine writer. I read all of his articles because he focuses on the "useless information" that makes baseball fun. Yesterday he did a piece on the Phillies losing ways (namely at home). I have taken the liberty of breaking it down for your pleasure...*Here's how hard it is to lose 22 home games by Father's Day...

Where's the barf bag?

Phillies fever turned into another tough pill to swallow. After sick slugger Ryan Howard gave his mates the go-ahead off the bench in the 7th, Ryan Madson gave it right back in the 9th in a 6-5 loss to the Orioles. The Phillies continue to find ridiculous new ways to lose at home, this time erasing one of the single-best storylines of the season. Suffering flu-like symptoms and a...

Sleeping With the Television On: MLB's The Pen, Episode 2

After last week's mostly expository hour-long debut episode, this week's installment of The Pen on the MLB Network takes the Philly pen from their sweep out west against the San Diego Padres in late May, up to their series in New York a few weeks ago against the Mets. Much happens in the period covered which I'm sure most of you remember--Chan Ho Park goes to the pen...

Gutsy HR by Howard wasted by Phillies vs. O's

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Brian Roberts hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth off fill-in closer Ryan Madson, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 Saturday night.

Philadelphia tells clueless Phils to take a hike

A capacity crowd watched the Orioles complete the sweep, ending one of the worst Phillies' homestands in history. Four hits and a run was all the Phils could squeeze from their lifeless bodies, beaten for six losses in a row in a 1-8 homestand. A carbon copy if last June, the story remains unchanged for good-glove, no-hit shortstop Jimmy Rollins, hitless in his last seven at...

On the Road Again

With Willie Nelson playing in the background the Phils have taken to the road again, where they are the major's best team (24-9). Last night they beat up on David Price like he was a pinata, but instead of candy, tons of runs spewed forth. The 10-1 drubbing with good pitching from Grand Pappy Moyer, Tyler Walker, and Sergio Escalona was just what this team needed. The struggles...

Guest Post: A Look At Some Slow Starts

This is the third guest post from my buddy James Miller, and just the fourth in the brief history of Sliding Into Home. Hopefully there are many more as time goes on.Today, he takes a look at some of the slow starts from around the league. We're just about 1/3 of the way through the 2009 season and I couldn't help but notice some of the surprisingly awful numbers certain players...

Get lost, Phillies, and don't come back until you are ready to win at home

On the road, they are the best team in baseball. At home, they are as bad as the Nationals. That's your 2009 Phillies, everyone.Since lamenting in my post last week about their home woes, the Phillies proceeded to lose four more games at home, bringing their home record to 13-22, the second worst home record in baseball. On the road, the Phillies are still a remarkable 23...

Pitiful Phillies lose 8 of 9 at home, still lead NL East

Those games (particularly the Saturday night game) were so painful to watch that I'm not going to re-live the pain by writing about them. If you want a good recap of the series, Todd Zolecki has a good one here. I really wouldn't have much to add to what he said. Now we head to Tampa Bay, and I really don't see things looking up. David Price vs. Jamie Moyer doesn'...
