The Elias Sports Bureau rankings, used to determine free agent compensation, have been released.
As expected Rangers OF Marlon Byrd and C Ivan Rodriguez are Type B free agents, meaning that if the club offers them salary arbitration and the players end up signing elsewhere, the Rangers would receive a sandwich round pick between the first and second rounds of next year's amateur draft.
Given the Rangers' current mode of operation, which is to protect draft picks, I can't see them playing on any Type A free agents, which would result in the loss of a first-round pick. However, as I type this, I also am reminded that they have two first-round picks next year (one for not signing Tanner Scheppers) and so, even if they lost a first-rounder, they'd still have a pick in the top 15. And they could be getting back extra picks for Byrd and Rodriguez if they don't re-sign them. So, perhaps the draft pick compensation wouldn't be as much of a deterrent as I thought.
