Cubs fans would probably agree right about now, but bad baseball is not why Fukudome is considered a bad word.
Elgin High School sophomore had to remove her Kosuke Fukudome jersey and wear a gym T-shirt to class Wednesday because of a misunderstanding about how to pronounce the All-Star right-fielder's last name.

"Someone stopped me in the hall and asked me what the back of my jersey said," Jill said.

She replied that it was the name of Cubs player, pronounced foo-koo-DOUGH-may. The school staffer wasn't so sure and consulted others.

Then a dean, Susan Matei, told Howe the jersey was inappropriate. Matei made Jill take it off and wear a gym shirt instead.
Whoa. Stop there. Someone in Chicago does not know who Kosuke Fukudome is? Again, Cubs fans would probably envy them right now, but that's still a bit odd, isn't it?
Associate Principal Alan Flota said students may wear Fukudome apparel at school.

"As long as it is a legitimate name, they will be allowed to wear it," Flota said.
Good news for her! And, hey, good news for Cubs fans! Lou Piniella has officially stated that Fukudome won't be in the lineup for Game 3.
"From now on, I don't want to hear about Fukudome anymore as far as whether he's going to play or not," Piniella said when a reporter asked him about Fukudome's slump. "I'm going to play [Mike] Fontenot or Reed Johnson or somebody else, and that's the end of that story. The kid is struggling, and there's no sense sending him out there anymore."
After half a season of miserable play, these last two games were finally enough to push Lou to face reality. Too late? Yeah, well, probably...

Boo You

In the third inning of last night's game, I heard something that I feel needs comment. The man leading off for the Cubs that inning was booed before he even approached the plate. At that moment, Fukudome was hadn't batted in game 2 and had recorded a putout in right field. True, he went 0 for 4 the night before, but outside of DeRo and The Riot, who exactly hit well in...

Cubs Fans: Don't Panic!

Ok Cubs fans, back up off that ledge and take a few deep breaths. This is NOT the end. I know things didn't go too well last night. Dempster couldn't find the strike zone if he had GPS navigation, and our lineup wasn't the on-base machine that it is known for. But this is not the time to lose our heads.

It's Gonna Happen

Yes it is Cubs fan. Yes it is.That stupid slogan has been knocking around Chicago for 2 seasons now. Leave it to Cubs fans to pick a slogan that comes back to bite you in the ass. Brilliant. But if you call yourself a Cubs fans, you've pretty much publicly claimed you aren't a genius. And these stupid white flags with a blue W that have been flying around Chicago this year...

Cubbie Chaser: This is the Sound of Suffering

As you probably know, the Cubs have a theme song. It's called "Go Cubs Go," and it was written and performed by the late Steve Goodman (God rest his soul.) Well, I think it's time to scrap that happy little ditty for something more appropriate. Don't you? Yes. It is definitely time. I've always been a big Radiohead fan, so naturally, "Let Down"...

Cubs Fan Arrested For Throwing Ball At Manny Ramirez

It's tradition at Wrigley Field for fans to throw back the home runs of opposing players. However, that doesn't mean throwing balls *at* opposing players. A Cubs fan was arrested during yesterday's Game 1 against the Dodgers for trying to plunk Manny Ramirez.

Chad's Coming Out Party

Not out of the closet, but into America's consciousness. I've written before about how he gets little credit for as good as he's been this year, but game 2 seems to have served as campaign for national recognition. Normally, I begin to resent players who get overhyped in the playoffs because the media falls in love with small sample size performances. This time, however...

Cubs Fans Can Eat Their Pitchers

Even before the first pitch of the series Chicago Cubs fans are getting excited. Not just fans though - businesses are getting in on the fun as well. Take Chicago-based Vienna Beef. They've created a whole line of hot dogs in honor of the Cubs' pitching staff.Cubs fans might want to try the Dempster Dog, which honors Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster's Canadian heritage....

Santo to Leno: No

Lost in the shuffle of the game last night was the Ron Santo's Jay Leno sidestory. According to Ron, Jay's people contacted Ron's people about Ron making an appearance on The Tonight Show, tonight. Ron declined. His purported reason was that the Cubs plane was scheduled to land between 2-3 hours before taping, so Ron would have to go directly from the plane to the...

Other things you can't do for two innings in Chicago

It's a sad day in Wrigleyville today as bars in the surrounding area were pretty much forced to go along with the city's new "seventh inning break rule" for the Cubs' upcoming playoffs. The "voluntary" rule follows the actions of...

On Ron Darling's "Mockery" Comment About Manny

So a few people wrote in about a moment from last night's Dodgers-Cubs game and I wanted to explore it a little bit today. Manny Ramirez had just hit a solo shot to centerfield off of Carlos Zambrano, and when going through the highlights, Ron Darling noticed a little smile that Manny flashed right before the pitch. Forget for a second the awesomeness of smiling at a pitcher...
