Found May 26, 2009 on Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:
When it was announced last month that 40 year old Gary Sheffield was acquired by the New York Mets the outcry from New York fans was heard all the way to Las Vegas where I sat back and said "way to go Omar".

Here are just some of the countless anti Gary Sheffield articles titles that littered the Mets Blogs.

Gary Sheffield Signed With The Mets, Bad Idea

Please don't get me wrong on this. These articles were written by some of the most respected Met Fans on the BR and some of my good friends. What made me get a little ballistic were the comments from these articles. The vast majority were extremely negative, pointing out his age, his so called bad attitude, his inability to play the field, his poor arm, him not being able to catch up to a fast ball, and his whiny self serving personality.

My comments were based on watching this guy just murder pitchers for many years and wherever he played he was a winner. People don't seem to like when players speak their minds especially on sensitive issues. Here in New York while with the Yankees Sheffield said about Joe Torre that he was not very nice to minority players. Joe Torre, a G-d at the time denied such reports. Yankee fans have still not forgotten that.

Here's the point to all this. Coming into tonight, for reasons some may site the injuries to Mets players, Sheffield has played a major role. He hit over .400 on the 10 game road trip and along with David and Carlos have kept the Mets competitive.

Going into tonight's game here's Gary's statistics.

AB R H 2B T HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVER OBP SLG OPS

20 20 21 4 1 3 11 18 15 1 1 .263 .404 .450 .854

All he did tonight was go 2 for 3 with 1 HR, 3 RBI's and would have had a fourth if Razor Shines did his job correctly. His average now stands at .277 and all the above numbers have gone up as well. In 20 games he has 18 walks and provides as good protection for David Wright as did Carlos Delgado.

There have been over the years that I have been watching the game certain players, despite their statistics, just their mere presence in the batters box that is intimidating to pitchers. I can think of a few right off the bat. Dave Parker, Chipper Jones, Barry Bonds, Mike Schmidt, Mickey Mantle.

In our generation Gary Sheffield is that man. I know the season is still young but let's give credit where credit is due. Gary Sheffield was a tremendous pick up for the Mets and deserves every bit of respect that we can give. Keep up the great work.

The New York Mets in Review: 40 Games

As early as April 10th the Mets faithful were already starting to pull their collective hair out. It was hoped for and expected that the Mets needed to get out of the box quickly so they would be right in the hunt immediately and the sting of 2008 could be left in it's wake.I wrote an article then telling Mets fans to relax it's a long season and we would have a better chance for...

Father's Day Retrospective

Today is a day to honor Dad. What better way to do it then a retrospective on the greatest Father's Day game of all time: Jim Bunning's Perfect Game against the New York Mets in 1964. Here's to you Dad(s).

We don't have a short stop

The Mets truly don't have a short stop...Jose Reyes proclaimed that he would not be in the line-up on Monday and there's no telling when the All-Star short stop will return. His back-up Alex Cora is already on the disabled list, after tearing a tendon in his throwing thumb.Ramon Martinez rushed back from hernia surgery, Assistant GM John Ricco said, normally Martinez would still be...

Author! Author!

It was noted during a recent Mets game that somebody was writing a book about the bizarre game that took place on July 4th of '85. Surely you remember it as the 19 inning debacle that ended near 4AM down in Atlanta. If I were to write a book about a particular baseball game, I might choose Livan Hernandez's complete game from Monday night.Seriously.First off, all the really good and...

Sox Avoid Sweep, Take Over 1st Place In AL East

Wins are always good but sometimes they’re just so extra special. The Boston Red Sox put up 9 unanswered runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th inning to win 12-5 and help avoid a sweep of the New York Mets in front of 37,446 on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park. With the win the Red Sox improve [...]

Braves' Cox tossed, ups ejection mark to 136

Atlanta manager Bobby Cox extended his record for ejections, getting tossed for the first time this year during the Braves' series opener at the New York Mets on Friday night. It was the 136th ejection for Cox, who last year surpassed John McGraw.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight - 5/24

The Boston Red Sox will look to salvage their series with the New York Mets after a tough late inning loss last night. The game this afternoon will start at 1:35 PM EDT and will be televised in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Mets television market, you can catch [...]

Suspending Your Belief

Here's a pet peeve of mine: When a story on the news is teased with "you're not going to believe this". Happens all the time, and it kills me every time. On Monday night, it was Kirk Gimenez's turn to use the ultimate tease, as in: "News about Carlos Beltran's knee that you will not believe."Usually when someone on television says: "You're not going to believe what ... or where ...

OF COURSE I’M HAPPY, CAN’T YOU TELL?

Obviously I’m extremely happy with the win last night especially with Livan Hernandez pitching like a prehistoric pitcher actually finishing a game, who does he thinks he is Roy Halliday? But we all need to remember that the opponent was one of the worst baseball teams to call it’s self a major league team since the Mets played in the Polo Grounds. I really didn’t want to piss...

Killer Completion! Livan Goes the Distance in Mets Win.

The huge performance during the ballgame is the greater story than all the news and whispers before it. With news that Reyes and Church have officially been sent to the disabled list, Carlos Beltran would sit this one out as well......

Livan Hernandez Pitches First CG in Citi Field

We all love trivia. And in the first year of Citi Field, we will have plenty of chances to come up with questions to stump our pals down the road. What were the odds coming into the year that Livan Hernandez would be the first pitcher to throw a complete game at the pitcher-friendly ballpark?

Things I’ve Noticed Early On!

Thanks to the great people over at MLBN, I’m actually able to see the Boston Red Sox in action as they square off with the New York Mets at Fenway Park.  It’s game two of their three game series and here’s just a few quick things I’ve noticed early on in the game between the [...]

THE F-MART ERA IS UPON US

word out of Queens is Jose Reyes and Ryan Church have been relegated to the DL (finally!) and Fernando Martinez is in the ball park and the lineup hitting 6th and Wilson Vladez (yes THE Wilson Valdez) has been obtained from the Cleveland Indians for cash and will play short most likely tomorrow when he reports

It’s Memorial Day weekend which means it’s time to relax, visit with family and friends, do some barbecuing and enjoy all the weekends festivities.  Oh, it also means the Boston Red Sox are in action all weekend long as they have three games slated with the dreaded New York Mets at Fenway.  The Mets who [...]

Boston Red Sox News & Notes - Memorial Day Edition 2009

I guess all the Boston Red Sox needed was for me to come back from North Carolina on Sunday to win a game against the New York Mets. They had lost the first two while I was away. I do kid though as it was nice to see the Red Sox offense wake up and give [...]
