Baseball Think Factory:
What we’ve long expected has finally happened: Kevin Gregg is no longer the closer. Last night he blew his third save of the month - and sixth overall - and allowed his twelfth home run. The Cubs have fallen 6 behind the Cards with just over 6 weeks left in the season. Is this move even going to make a difference?
Not to let Gregg off the hook, but last night’s loss can also be blamed on the offense, which has reverted back to their April form. There are still individuals who are hitting well - Lee, Fox, Fukudome, and Baker - but as a team they’re struggling. Games like last night are the reasons we hear Jim Hendry talking about needing more clutch hitters. The pitching, outside of the bullpen, has been pretty good almost the entire season. But it’s starting to look like this Cubs team is less than the sum of its parts (as opposed to last year, which felt like the opposite).
I’m assuming Lou’s going to use Guzman as the closer now; Marmol’s been almost as unreliable ...

Cubs have had some bad closers since 1988, but Hawkins likely worst of worse
SAN DIEGO -- The Cubs have had their share of memorable closers over the years, from ribald Rod Beck to self-promoting wacko Turk Wendell to six-fingered flop Antonio Alfonseca.
Kevin Gregg has turned from average to douche
Alright then. So, it turns out that perhaps our earliest suspscions of Gregg were right -- after blowing last night's game against the hapless Padres, the Cubs are cutting the cord on Gregg's role as closer and turning to a different arm. As one of the Gregg defenders*, I'm disappointed by this turn of events, but I give props to the usually slow-to-act Lou Piniella for...
News: Kevin Gregg Out As Chicago Cubs Closer
It has finally happened, Lou Piniella has come to his senses on Kevin Gregg as the Chicago Cubs closer.

Game Recap - Padres 4, Cubs 1, Time of Death?
Rob sent me this EMail earlier today:"It is only out of respect of your wishes that I don't issue my annual "Time of Death" post today. But I think they are dead."
In response, I said:You can do that. I'll just tack on an edit at the end in which I proclaim myself the doctor who just won't let go, hammering my closed fist into this season's chest...
Cubs Amble Off to Desolate San Diego To Crawl Into a Hole and Die
On the heels of last night's epic Kevin Gregg collapse that saw the Cubs blow a 1-0 ninth inning lead with two outs only to lose 4-1 on a Kyle Blanks walkoff ****, Andy Dolan at Desipio.com has come up with the perfect metaphor to describe the recent Cubs collapse:
There is a phenomenon in the animal world, particularly among dogs and elephants (of all things) where when they...

Francisco Cordero And the Cubs Would Be a Great Fit
The Cubs need a closer—a competent closer, that is.
Closer Kevin Gregg has been erratic at best this season. Gregg has a pedestrian 4.47 ERA, has blown six saves, and has given up a whopping 12 home runs in 56 innings. After last night's debacle in San Diego, it looks like Cubs manager Lou Piniella has had it with Gregg as the closer.
"I think we're going to make...
