PLAYERS: Ken Griffey
TEAMS: Seattle Mariners

First off, i love the fact that Griffey is back with the M's. If you grew up in the Northwest in the '90s and don't still idolize The Kid, you're a communist.

I spent a good 5 minutes today staring at his page on the M's roster. I still can't beleive it. I'm giddy.

That being said, one picture on the Seattle Times gallery put a damper on all of this bromance and revelry. There are 130+ baseball games we'll need him to play and is Griffey...fat?

  • That cant be true....wow
  • Yep, old gray mare she aint what she used to be...
  • You're nuts. He is in better shape than when he left. He may be 10 years older, but has more experience than you will ever have in baseball. I am not expecting 56 homeruns, I am expecting his leadership and his role modeling for the younger Mariners on this team.
  • I too, love griffey, but "better shape than when he left"? Please.
  • He is the greatest player to ever roam the outfield in Seattle starting in 1989, leaving in 1999 only to return to his baseball roots in 2009. There is no other consummate ballplayer who has my respect as much as he does. I raised my sons on Ken Griffey Jr. Can remember the 1995 playoff game with the Angels where I was crazy enough to take three boys under the age of 10. I thank him for understanding that he NEEDS to be in Seattle.
  • He looks like an athlete who is turning 40 and hasn't used steroids or HGH... big deal
  • "...I thank him for understanding that he NEEDS to be in Seattle. " AND Seattle NEEDS him to be back. If for nothing else, to help give us something to think about besides how awful this team has become under the "guidance" of Howard Lincoln.
  • I actually like this picture better from the same gallery. He still has the sweetest swing in baseball. I am also giddy.

  • So true. Here's best griffey swing photo ever. Unfortunately the top left corner reminds us how long ago it was ("Joe Smith: The NBA's #1")

  • Griffey's one of the all time greatest... He's gettin up there in yrs... he just put on a few extra lbs during the off season... dude's got a bit to get it back to playing weight... needs to definitely get it off so that he doesn't add strain to the knees...
  • Griffey is my all-time fav baseball player
  • I love Griffey, but I think his lack of commitment to conditioning is his biggest downfall. So much God given talent but I do not think he reached his true potential because of that.
  • Any man with six pack abs that's leaning with their arms back and tugging on their shirt will look like he has a gut. It's not hard to do. I guarantee that Ken Griffey Jr is in fantastic shape. It was bad timing that a picture was taken while he was in that stance.
  • Dude, those are not six pack abs.
  • Word. Plus, he's clearly wearing the XXL fleece pull over to hide his spare tire.
  • He's right I know form personal experience;)
  • Here's another pic of that perfect swing.

  • Griffey will def be my all time favorite player in MLB just for the reason he never used STERIODS...... And the reason i know this is look at the guy he never went from 185lbs to 225lbs in a year. You can tell they guys that used roids.
  • Griffey is about 50 lbs heavier today than he was in his prime.... all of it pure fat. He distributed the weight pretty well, but it's fat nonetheless. I'm surprised a 40 year old athlete, fighting for a starting position would let himself go like that. He needs to drop at least 25 lbs, preferably 35.

Returning to Seattle: Griffey Jr. & Mariners? fans?

Ken Griffey Jr. is returning to Seattle this season. The Mariners hope that he's bringing the fans with him. If he does? there incentive bonuses galore!

Ken Griffey Jr. is back in Seattle, home again where he belongs

Ken Griffey Jr. has made another transition in his late great baseball career. After departing Cincy then moving on to the WhiteSox the star veteran slugger has found his place back where he started. The Mariners have offered him a contract to play for a year worth $2 million. He'll have to work on staying healthy this off-season and be ready to spring into action. I have a feeling...

Seatowning 2/22/09: Juan Garcia is the MAN

Random Musings I don't think Griffey mania going to die down anytime soon. Opening day is going to be crazy. I think the Mariners are going to surprise a lot of people this year. All of these little signings and trades that Zduriencik has made have added up into a solid makeup of a team. They're not going to win the World Series or anything, but finishing 2nd in the AL West...

How the Mariners will mesh

When Jack Zdurenciek was hired I had my doubts. But his scouting background did impress me. And now that I've seen how he goes about his business and the way he presents himself, it shows me this guy has it more right than Bill Bavasi ever did. This guy is smart. Yeah the moves made this year ...

Scraps: Wilson, Aumont, Fonseca, YuBet

Some odds and ends to get some new conversation Mike Wilson managed to clear waivers and has been re-signed by the Mariners on a minor league deal.  Some call him a lost cause, but I’m glad to keep him in the system for now.  Phillippe Aumont will be pitching for team Canada in ...

A-Rod-induced fantasy titles are tainted

Forget the record books; put an asterisk next to any fantasy-league title A-Rod helped win. Or in Peter Schrager's case, lose.

Didn’t See That Coming

To make room for Ken Griffey Jr. on the 40-man roster, the Seattle Mariners placed OF Mike Wilson on release Wilson will stay on waivers for 72 hours before becoming a free agent, at which point the Mariners can re-sign him to a minor league deal.? Wilson has a lot more upside than ...

Ron Kittle Thinks Canseco's a Marked Man?

Former White Sox player and 1983 American League Rookie of the Year Ron Kittle says that he fears for Jose Canseco's safety.  Right, snitches and stitches and all that; Peyton Manning taught me all about it.  Here are some Kittle quotes from the Trib:   "My first thought was: 'I wonder who's going to be the first one to shoot him,' " Kittle said Monday. "I still think...

Mike Sweeney: Will He Make the Opening Day Roster?

I recieved a text message from a friend that read:Last season I pulled hard for R.A. Dickey to make the squad. This season it's Mike Sweeney. I really like that guy.Dickey was a pleasant surprise last season, he was actually pretty decent. He didn't warrant a resigning, but he was arguably better than Carlos Silva and Miguel Batsita. Like Dickey, Sweeney is entering the upcoming...

Weekly Grades: Griffey's Gigantic Impact

Ken Griffey Junior: The Seattle Mariners outfought the Atlanta Braves for Ken Griffey Junior, who signed a one year contract with a base salary around two million plus incentives. I, along with most likely all other Mariner fans, would like to say thank you to Griffey for choosing the city that saw him rise to fame over a team where he would likely just be another aging superstar...

Atlanta Signs OF Garret Anderson to 1-Year Deal

After Ken Griffey Jr. became Sleepless in Seattle once again, the Atlanta Braves moved quickly to sign free agent OF Garret Anderson from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim ((just had to say the whole thing...just rolls off the tongue...)). The Braves signed the veteran outfielder to a one-year deal, somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.5 million. The 36-yr old slugger has played...

Garret Anderson: Look Out for the Braves

Almost a week ago, the Braves seemed to be closing in on signing Ken Griffey Jr to a one year contract worth just over $2.5 million. However, Griffey decided to sign with the Mariners instead of the Braves, which left Braves GM Frank Wren in an interesting position. Should he let young guys ...
