For Game 4 of the 2009 World Series, Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel had a dilemma. Should he start ace Cliff Lee on short rest or should he go with Joe Blanton? As it turns out, Manuel has decided to go with Blanton. Lee has been very good in the postseason but he has no professional experience starting on only three days rest. Apparently, Manuel didn’t want to see whether or not Lee can be effective on short rest. Instead, Lee will get the baseball to start Game 5. Going with Blanton isn’t without risk. Against the New York Yankees in four [...]Post from: Knuckle Curve

The Inevitable Cliff Lee Vs. Babe Ruth Mashup

Lots of talk about the Babe last night, lots of talk about Cliff Lee...  So what would happen if George Herman "strolled" to the plate and called his shot against Clifton Phifer? Yep. Everything appears to be in order. Thanks to Mike Benner of Woefully Misinformed for sending this over.

Blanton to start Game 4 for Phillies – not Lee

Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has decided to start Joe Blanton in Game 4 of the World Series instead of ace Cliff Lee on short rest. What this means is that Lee won’t be available for a possible Game 7 because he’ll pitch Game 5 now. Considering Lee has never started on short rest in his [...]

Yankees even up series behind Burnett's gem

(Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)When you are looking for a pitcher to match the masterful performance that Cliff Lee had for the Phillies in Game 1, there would be quite a few names that come up before A.J. Burnett. While Burnett's outing wasn't quite up to par with Lee's, the Yankee pitcher did everything he could to silence the Phillie bats in a 3-1 Game 2 win...

PHILS LEAD 1-0 IN THAT ONE CHAMPIONSHIP

In a duel of former Cleveland Indians pitchers, it was the Philadelphia Phillies’ Cliff Lee who managed to go deep and pitch a 6-hit complete game against the New York Yankees. Lee’s 10 strikeouts–and two solo homers from Chase Utley–helped power the Phillies to a 6-1 win in Game 1 of the World Series. “To [...]

Lee Dominates the Yanks – Can We Have a Do-Over?

Cliff Lee is an absolute stud. Not that Indians fans needed any reminder of that, but the performance he put on last night in game one of the World Series, was pure domination of a lineup that is probably the best 1-9 the league has seen since the mid-90’s. Clifton Phifer Lee pitched a complete game, six [...]

Phils go to Blanton, not Lee in Game 4

PHILADELPHIA -- The doubters screamed when Phillies manager Charlie Manuel named Pedro Martinez as his Game 2 starter. Now he's giving them more fodder. Manuel has tabbed Joe Blanton as his World Series Game 4 starter instead of bringing back Game ...

Cliff Lee, Ace

Regardless of your rooting interests last night, you had to be impressed by the complete domination of Cliff Lee. The Yankees have a great offense, but he made them look foolish all night, keeping all-star hitters off-balance with a mix of pitches that don’t look like they should be that hard to hit. [...]

Yankees hitters not the only thing silenced by Lee

Cliff Lee starts the World Series by baffling the Yanks in Game 1. Mark Kriegel says the Philly ace silenced more than nine bats.

After Lee, Phils' rotation question mark

Cliff Lee's dominance in Game 1 of the World Series masked a potentially very big problem for the Phillies. Namely: What do they have after him? Manager Charlie Manuel has so little confidence in his rotation aside from Lee that he started 37-yea...

Heyman On Lee, Lackey, Mets, Nats

Cliff Lee out-pitched C.C. Sabathia last night, there's no question about that. Now, as Jon Heyman of SI.com points out, Lee's value is at an all-time high. The Phillies figure to try to lock Lee up this offseason, but he may cost $100MM or more. After two straight World Series appearances, however, Heyman says the Phillies have the "loot" to reach an agreement with their ace.&...
