Every Yankee fan remembers the atrocious 2008 season Melky had, and no one could understand the Yankees opening their pockets that much after paying him only $461,200 in 2008. Maybe the Yankees themselves didn't understand it. But, they paid him anyway. It turns out they did the right thing. The Yankee I like to call Baby Clutch has been just that this season. He leads the team in clutch hits and, aside from throwing to the wrong base occasionally, he makes the plays in centerfield. Now Melky has become the first Yankee since 1995 to hit for the cycle. Who expected him to be the one to do that? I didn't. True, hitting for the cycle involves luck, but don't dismiss the skill either. Melky Cabrera has skills, and in ...

"An Offensive Orgy" to win an ugly game (Postgame Notes 06 August 2009)

I should explain here that the term "offensive orgy" comes not from me but from Michael Kay.Aha!, you say, as you make your way through this post.Basically, it's like this:If you're going to walk twelve (yes, twelve) batters for the other team, you'd better show up to hit yourselves, and that's exactly what happened.Every Yankee starter had a hit and only...

Yankees.com: Outburst propels Yanks past Sox

NEW YORK—The last time the Yankees had gone this deep into a season winless against the Red Sox, their name was the Highlanders and they played home games at Hilltop Park. The Most Important Hits in The Yankees 2009 Season So Far

Timely hitting can do so much. That said, the hits that end up really mattering are often the ones that are important only in hindsight--they aren't, necessarily, the walk-off hits, but ones that allowed the rally to keep going, ones that grabbed the lead or even tied the game, etc.In no particular order I would include:Alex Rodriguez's first swing home run against the Orioles...
