Those poor Washington Nationals. Is it safe to say that everyone should feel sorry for them?Buried in the midst of the National League East, the Nationals sit in last place not only in their division, but the entire league with a 20-48 record.Skimming up and down the 25-ma roster, there are a lot of familiar faces, if you're a Boston Red Sox or a New York Yankees fan.For starters for Red Sox Nation, there's relief pitcher Julian Tavarez. He was valuable in 2007, thrown in as a fifth starter (7-11, 5.15 ERA), but he was no Brad Penny. He spent two and a quarter seasons in Boston compiling a 12-16 record in 29 starts.Next on the list is familiar friend, catcher Josh Bard. In 2006, Bard failed miserably trying to catch knuckleballer Tim Wakefield and was shipped back out to San Diego so the Sox could re-acquire Doug Mirabelli. No one will ever forget that state police escort from the airport to make it to Fenway on time for Wakefield's start. One not so familiar face is Willie Harris wh...

Boston Pops Nats

(AP Photo by Manuel Balce Ceneta. Just another road loss for the Nats.) "We battled hard today. When we play a team of that category, we have to play perfect baseball." (Manny Acta, via Washington Times, 6/25/2009) More home cookin' for the Sox in D.C. Red Sox 6, Nationals 4: Craig Stammen perfect through three, but the problem is they play...

West Ham sign Inter Milan striker Luis Jimenez

West Ham United have confirmed the signing of striker Luis Jimenez on a season-long loan from Inter Milan.

It’s time to contract the Nationals

Watching any last-place team can be a sad affair, but watching the Sox beat up on the Nationals twice in two days made me wonder why, exactly, we have a Washington Nationals team. Frankly, I think we’d be better without it. Sure, the Rays and Tigers have recently proven that teams can even go from worst to first in the big money era. But I don’t get the sense the Nats...

Another Nats 'pen move: Clippard up, Wells out

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Tyler Clippard has been promoted from Triple-A Syracuse and Kip Wells has been designated for assignment, the latest shuffle for the struggling Washington Nationals bullpen.

Joe Beimel on Throwing at Dunn, and His Beard

This was two weeks ago. (By Manuel Balce Ceneta - AP) Joe Beimel was raised in Kersey, Pennsylvania, a small rural town of 3,000 people where all the menfolk grow hunting beards come November. "So I'm growing mine now instead of waiting," he observed this week. "A lot of people where I live have mustaches and beards, so they're probably proud." That, of...

The Nats' Suit-and-Tie Drive

When Nats first-base coach Marquis Grissom arrived in the majors, he weighed 175 pounds. When he retired, he weighed 200 or 205. Now, he's up to around 225 pounds, and the 175-pound Grissom isn't walking through that door any time soon. Those 50 bonus pounds he picked up along the way have led to some interesting alterations to his wardrobe. Like, when Grissom goes to formal events...

Woeful Nats give O's fans (and '62 Mets) hope

Washington could break all-time record of 120 losses H uman beings need hope to survive. And nothing gives a baseball team more hope than looking at its schedule and seeing the following words: Washington Nationals.

Nats unable to claw back against Sox

For a ballclub with the worst record in the majors and far too many gut-wrenching losses to count, the Washington Nationals have shown an admirable amount of pluck over the last 2 months. Rarely during this trying season has Manny Acta's team rolled over and played dead. The Nationals may not win very many games, but they can sleep well knowing they almost always go down with...

Sox Erupt Late To Take Down Nationals

In a tight 3-3 battle heading into the seventh inning, the Red Sox erupted for eight runs in the final three innings, including six runs in the eighth to post an 11-3 win over the Washington Nationals. Adam Kilgore has Jacoby Ellsbury, Jason Bay and Jason Varitek standing out as the stars of this win. John Tomase says [...]Post from: Boston Sports Media Watch

Green dodges bat, misses ball in Boston's 6-4 win
