On Sept. 6th Mike Pelfrey went eight innings against the Chicago Cubs in which he allowed one run on five hits and one walk, while striking out five. It was a big outing for Pelfrey who had two horrible back-to-back outings, in 9.2 innings he allowed 11 runs on 17 hits and 10 walks while striking out seven.I'm not a big Brian Schneider fan, especially with him hitting under .200 but it was clear to me that Pelfrey's good outing against the Cubs can be attributed to the catcher. In those two bad outings it seemed that Pelfrey's struggles were more mental then anything else. Schneider handled Pelfrey with kit gloves; head nods on good pitches, pointing his mitt to Pelfrey on extra nasty pitches and getting to the mound quickly if Pelfrey showed any signs of frustration. After the Cubs game the plan was for Schneider to work with Pelf for the rest of the year, but maybe with the catcher admitting to not being in the teams plans for next year they decided to see how he would...
