The Rangers had a total of 22 Rawlings Gold Glove trophies on their roster in 2009 and made one of the biggest defensive improvements in baseball, yet for only the third time in the last 20 seasons no Texas player ended up with one of the awards.
Probably the most deserving Ranger of consideration was not rookie SS Elvis Andrus, but 2B Ian Kinsler, who displayed greatly improved consistency. Kinsler, however, ranked third in the AL in UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) behind winner Placido Polanco and Dustin Pedroia. I'm guessing, however, that few coaches and managers (the voting body for the Gold Glove awards) looked at beneath-the-surface stats like UZR. More likely, they looked at more tangible stats like fielding percentage and errors. Polanco led the AL in fielding percentage at .997 and made a league-low two errors.
