The Rangers lost a weekend series to the Mariners and while the offense was slowed at times, the two losses came when starters Kevin Millwood and Derek Holland struggled. Millwood's difficult stretch has lasted a dozen starts now. Millwood was frustrated enough that he threw an extra bullpen session on Sunday trying to figure things out. Millwood is 2-5 with a 6.29 ERA in his last 12 starts. He didn't make it out of the fourth inning on Saturday. And it's possible the Rangers could skip his next start. Derek Holland, meanwhile, has had troubles in his last four starts. He allowed six runs in six innings against the Yankees on Aug. 26, 10 runs in three innings versus Toronto on Aug. 31 and six runs in 3.1 innings against Baltimore on Sept. 6. Holland got an extra rest before his Sunday start, but allowed five runs in six innings. What would you do about Millwood and Holland? Do you ride them both out? Do you skip one of their starts? Do you replace one of them with Dus...

Rangers’ Finances

Baseball Time in Arlington rounds up reports on the Rangers financial woes, and it appears MLB is calling the shots now. That makes Kevin Millwood’s status very interesting: The decision to allow Kevin Millwood’s 2010 option — worth $12 million, as reported many times over — to vest could be taken out of the Rangers’ [...]

G140: Rangers lose very soggy game Saturday, 8-3

The Rangers were outhit 15-6. That's the bottom line, really. Kevin Millwood was ass. 3.2 innings, 8 hits, 2 walks,5 earned runs. He's out of gas it seems, and I'm starting to see rumblings that the Rangers should sit him to not let him get to his vesting option. If they tried that, I could quite easily see Scott Boras raising a stink about that. I'm sure someone...

Millwood won't face Angels

The Rangers will keep Kevin Millwood out of their rotation plans the rest of the homestand as they give him more time to work on some mechanical changes he is making to alter his string of poor performances. The right-hander won't pitch until either Monday or next Tuesday at Oakland. Left-hander Derek Holland will pitch Sunday against the Angels. -- Jeff Wilson

Maggs, Millwood Inching Toward Vesting Options

Big-money vesting options are at stake this month for a pair of Scott Boras clients.  Right fielder Magglio Ordonez's $18MM option for 2010 vests with just eight more plate appearances.  And pitcher Kevin Millwood is just 13 outs away from locking in a $12MM salary for next year. The Ordonez situation is simple.  He's been hitting well since the beginning of August...

Kevin Millwood Running Out of Gas

Right when it appeared Kevin Millwood would finally pitch to the level of his contract, bad stuff has begun to happen. The Rangers ace has quite simply run out of gas. Since the All Star Break Kevin Millwood has pitched awful, with a 5.32 ERA and just two wins in nine starts. Before the break he was 9-8 and had an ERA of 3.46. He has just two wins in two months. It may only be luck...

Texas Rangers fall as Kevin Millwood struggles

The Opening Day starter has his second-shortest outing of the season.

Ranger's Money Woes May Aid Red Sox

The Texas Rangers are a financial mess and their money problems may cause them to lose the wild-card race.  The already lost out on signing their number one pick and now they may have to shut down Kevin Millwood for the remainder of the season so he does not hit 180 innings pitched which would guarantee him $12 million next season. However, owner Tom Hicks contradicted the...

Odds & Ends: Johnson, Dontrelle, Millwood

Some links for the evening... Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald hears that there's "some sentiment" within the Marlins organization toward offering Josh Johnson a long-term deal. Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune wonders if the Tigers might decide to eat the $12MM they owe Dontrelle Willis. The Rangers may skip Kevin Millwood's next start,Â...

Rangers get on the board, trail Seattle, 3-2

The Rangers got going late tonight, because of the rain. And it took them three innings to get started once the game got got going. Trailing, 3-0, Julio Borbon got the Rangers within a run with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third. Ichiro doubled off Kevin Millwood and scored a run in the top of the first and added a homer later. The Rangers could really use this one...

Rangers Finances Worsening; League Calling The Shots?

David Pinto points us (sans story link) to a Baseball Time In Arlington piece questioning the Rangers' finances in the face of mounting evidence that the club is running on fumes: Team President Nolan Ryan claimed that the team was unlikely to be sold prior to 2010, though there are signs to the contrary; in particular, the team has fielded six offers to buy, since narrowed...
