Found August 19, 2009 on Small White Ball:
Say what you will about Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz, but he's heard it all before: he's too immature, he's too skinny, he's not ready for this level of play, he's not worth the hype.Wednesday night, the 25-year-old Texan took to the hill for the seventh time this season and only had to deal with the man he was rumored to be dealt for - Toronto stud Roy Halladay - in a place he hadn't won before - Rogers Centre - and in the middle of the AL East pennant race where every game matters. But Buchholz continued to be unfazed by all of it and put up his third-straight solid start, going six innings and allowing just one run on six hits on 94 pitches for the win while Halladay looked like the inexperienced one (five innings, eight hits, four earned runs, 103 pitches). He's learning on the job and despite going up against the other team's best, Buchholz continues to send a message to anyone that will listen that he has earned his spot.In the two starts leading up to Wednesday, Buchholz had been matched up against two other aces in Detroit's Justin Verlander and New York's CC Sabathia. Here's how he fared:- Vs. Verlander: 7.0 IP, one earned run, five hits, three K's, three walks, 100 pitches. He took the hard luck loss as Verlander didn't allow a run in eight innings of work and Detroit won 2-0.- Vs. Sabathia: 6.0 IP, two earned runs, six hits, three K's, five walks, 105 pitches. Again, he took the loss as Sabathia allowed just two hits in 7.2 innings as again, Boston couldn't manage a single run in a 5-0 loss in the Bronx. While there have been struggles - namely a horrendous outing against Baltimore before this stretch of quality starts - Buchholz (2-3, 3.99 ERA) has been pitching well enough to keep his spot until Tim Wakefield and/or Daisuke Matsusaka returns and deserves credit for filling a hole left by John Smoltz's abysmal run in a Red Sox uniform. There is no coincidence this is happening since the July 31st trading deadline has passed, a deadline where his name was brought up regularly for weeks leading up. Now that he is assured he's staying with the Red Sox the rest of this season, Buchholz knows this is his time to prove he belongs and he's taking full advantage of it. Don't let the haters fool you: Buchholz is for real and this three-start trial by fire against three of the AL's best shouldn't be overlooked. Those that say he isn't pitching well should explain what their criteria is, because from everything I'm seeing, this is exactly what you should expect from a top prospect with 25 career starts pitching for one of the highest-profile and most covered teams in sports. You have to like thinking ahead to a rotation featuring Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Matsusaka and Buchholz in 2010, but there's a lot of baseball this season to be played and more opportunities for him to evolve into an ace of his own.Josh Nason is the main writer for Small White Ball, a New England-based sports and media blog on the MVN Network. To Be The Man, You Must Beat The Man. So That Makes Clay Buchholz The Man.

I don't like to brag, but I totally called that one. And it hasn't happened a lot this season. Typically when I predict a big game, the Sox pull a complete Hindenburg. But this time, they came up huge. Clay came up huge. Just when we needed it most. And a match-up that looked tough on paper turned out to be pretty one-sided for nine innings.Look, we're at the point where...

8/19: Buchholz takes on third straight ace.

Roy Halladay, current ace, takes on potential future ace, Clay Buchholz. Buchholz has been drawing aces for the past three starts now. Before this, he faced off with CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander, losing both games, but pitching decent enough.

The Future Mrs. Buchholz: Yankee fans are mean

With another big Yankees-Red Sox series on the horizon, I figured I'd pass this bit of info along from the Inside Track:Red Sox hurler Clay Buchholz’ bride-to-be, Lindsay Clubine, got a crash course on being a Red Sox [team stats] fan in Yankee Stadium earlier this month.“Yankees fans, they are mean!” said the future Mrs. B, who hit the new NYC ballpark to watch her...

G119: Buchholz Beats Blue Jays, Halladay, 6-1

When I spoke to Clay Buchholz a month ago, he told me the key to his season would be getting off to a good start and keeping his composure when things got rough so he could avoid the ‘big inning’. Note to Clay: it helps when the offense scores you a couple of runs, too. Tonight, it [...]

Buchholz Shines In Red Sox 6-1 Win

Clay Buchholz has had some tough-luck his last two times out having to face the other teams’ ace. Wednesday night at Rogers Centre was no different as he squared off with Toronto Blue Jays all-everything Roy Halladay. Buchholz allowed one run over six innings of work while David Ortiz, Jason Bay and Victor Martinez homered as [...]

Boston Red Sox News & Notes

In getting the win against Toronto last night, Clay Buchholz equaled his win total from last year, a disastrous season for the young righty. Now 2-3, Buchholz's only other win this year was also against Toronto, in his season debut on July 17. With the win, Buchholz's ERA dropped to 3.99, the first time it has been below 4 since July 28. If Buchholz wins his next start...

Clay pigeons

Up until Tuesday night, when he caught a glimpse of Ricky Romero’s name as that evening’s Toronto starter, Clay Buchholz thought he had avoided his recent fate. He thought he would be pitching in this series against Romero, a pitcher having a good year, but certainly not having a year the caliber of Roy Halladay’s.

Momentum Going Back to Boston

Lots and lots to like from last night's sweep in Toronto.Jon Lester threw eight solid innings, allowing just a run and three hits, after loading the bases and allowing the run in the first.J.D. Drew banged out two home runs and Victor Martinez hit a rocket out of the SkyDome (I will always call Toronto's home that) and the Red Sox coasted to an 8-1 demolition of the Blue...
