As the Mets' six-game winning streak came to a halt on Monday, thanks to an all too familiar blowup by the bullpen, Mets fans were reminded just how much they miss Billy Wagner. But with Billy facing yet another setback in his rehab, it remains unknown just how long New York will be without the closer they love to hate. In the meantime, there's a pennant race going on, and the Mets' recent surge isn't going to cover up the fact that the bullpen needs help ? and more than just Luis Ayala. And at this time of year, the franchise will likely have to search internally for solutions. John Maine, two starts removed from the disabled list, recently said he'd move to the 'pen if needed. And while that's very noble of the young starter, Maine pitching the ninth doesn't make as much sense as Pedro Martinez. In 13 starts this season, Pedro is averaging a mere 5 1/3 innings per outing, resulting in more work for an awful bullpen, and more chances to blow critical victories. But Pedro is a saavy veteran who's been throwing up to 91 miles per hour this season. And if he could save the bullpen ? and ultimately the Mets' season ? he'd put his Hall of Fame career back in the spotlight much more so than as a starter who can no longer make it to the seventh inning. During the Mets' post-game show on Monday, Keith Hernandez said the team shouldn't mess with its rock-solid rotation. But how can you not? It's much easier to fill the No. 5 spot in the rotation than it is to find a reliable pitcher to finish out close victories. Why not move Brian Stokes (10-8, 4.41 ERA in 22 starts at Triple-A New Orleans) out of the 'pen, where he's not used to pitching, and into the rotation? He may not be the greatest solution, but couldn't you live with a rotation of Johan Santana, Maine, Oliver Perez, Mike Pelfrey and Stokes for the sake of the relief corps? Since the All-Star break, the Mets' bullpen ERA is 6.53. Something needs to change. Otherwise, the Mets will be at home come October.

Smoke Screen: Wagner will NOT be ready for Monday

As indicated in many reports, Most of them said that Billy Wagner will join the team on Monday. In the Denver Post it's a different story: Billy Wagner felt discomfort in his pitching elbow after throwing a simulated game Saturday and the New York Mets' closer won't come off the disabled list Monday as expected. Wagner, sidelined with a strained left forearm, threw...

Decision time approaches for Castillo

Luis Castillo is expected to make his first start at NYSEG Stadium for the Binghamton Mets tonight. Castillo is 1-for-8 in three starts with the B-Mets and 2-for-28 in 11 rehab games between GCL, St. Lucie and the Binghamton Mets. Let me do the math for you: that's .071.

Is Wagner Done for rest of the Year???

The Mets and Billy Wagner say no, that he is not finished for the year, despite what is looking like a very ominous elbow injury. I'm no doctor, but the fact that both Wagner and GM Omar Minaya described the inflammation as actually getting worse, that's not a good sign. The immediate plan is to leave Wagner on the shelf until the swelling subsides and then have another MRI...

Minaya says Wagner not done for season

Mets GM Omar Minaya said he doesn't believe Billy Wagner is done for the season. "No, he's not done for the year, but the news is not good," Minaya said on Mets Extra on WFAN. "There's no way to sugarcoat it."

inGame: Mets 7, Braves 3

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the New York Mets (69-57) offense woke up, scoring five runs on their way to a 7-3 win over the Atlanta Braves Tuesday night at Shea Stadium.

Steve Pearce--Met Killer

Two straight Monday afternoon games against the Mets. Two deficits. Two game winning hits by Steve Pearce.---Pearce has been very unimpressive since his callup, but this makes two weeks in a row that he did in the Mets in the Pirates' final at-bat.-Paul Maholm was shaky early and gave up a run in the first (shocking, I know), but limited the damage and allowed just one more run in...

20 Years Ago: A Look Back at the 1988 Mets

The year was 1988. Bill Cosby's sweaters hypnotized us into buying Jell-O Pudding Pops. The nation was swept up in the controversy of the day: Which one of the Golden Girls was Axl Rose singing about in "Sweet Child o' Mine" (Of course it turned out to be Bea Arthur)? And the movie Cocktail inspired a generation of children to quit playing Go Fish, drop out of elementary...

Pat the bat a Met ?

What a familiar site, Phillies jersey #5 rounding the bases as a Mets pitcher puts his head down. If you look up Mets killer you will find Pat Burrell as the first example. It's been said that his last contract was specifically based on his production against the Mets. Approximately 20% of his HRs and RBIs have come against the Mets. Burrell is a free agent at the end of...

GameDay #123 vs. Mets

Mets (66-56) at Pirates (55-67)7:05--PNC Park, PittsburghPedro Martinez (3-3, 5.37) vs. Zach Duke (4-10, 5.10)[Preview]---------Skyblast THIRD Strike tonight (Phil Vassar). Maybe we can actually win one of them.-And no, Pedro Alvarez is not going to play tonight. Everyone is absolutely ecstatic at the signing, though--as they should be (check any Pirates blog on the sidebar). It...

Mets 7, Pirates 4

Zach Duke was destroyed.-The Pirate offense was weak, again. Andy LaRoche hit a solo shot and a mini-rally emerged in the ninth, but the Bucs just got 3 of the 6 they needed.-There really isn't much more to say. 13 games under .500 now. Things are bright for the future, but they aren't very bright at the moment.-Tom Gorzelanny dominated down at Indianapolis, taking a no hitter...

Welcome to Shea Luis Ayala

While the Mets continue to search for a closer, not all games will be won in the 9th inning. Newly acquired Luis Ayala made his Mets debut in the 7th inning. Oliver Perez didn't have his best stuff tonight but found a way to limit the damage to a three run third. Perez ran out of gas in the 7th when he put runners on the corners while only recording one out. So many times this...
