Ryan Dempster (11-8, 3.51/1.30) vs. Doug Davis (8-14, 4.19/1.53)
For the final time this year ... Chicago Cubs Baseball is on the Air! The Cubs play their final game of the season this afternoon against Doug Davis and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Today also concludes a long stretch of games ... the Cubs played ball in 56 of the seasons final 59 days.
Ryan Dempster will shoot for his 12th win of the year. Dempster should top the 200-inning mark for the second consecutive year (195 in 30 starts). If Dempster is able to pick up the win this afternoon he would join Ted Lilly (12-9) and Randy Wells (12-10) for tops on the staff.
Today is a rematch of the game in Arizona on April 29. Doug Davis beat Ryan Dempster in the finale of the three-game series, 10-0.
For the last time this ...

Yes, You CAN Steal 1st Base!
Hak-Ju Lee used his blazing speed to beat-out a routine grounder to second with the game tied, bases-loaded, and two outs in the bottom of the 9th, giving the Cubs a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Brewers in AZ Instructional League action at Fitch Park Field #3 this afternoon in Mesa.
The Cubs entered the bottom of the 9th trailing the Brew Crew 4-3, thanks to a two...
2009 Cribbie Awards
Last day of the season (for teams that aren’t good enough to be in the playoffs). Time to hand out some awards for accomplishment or lack thereof to deserving Cubs players.
Ryne Sandberg MVP Award: Derrek Lee. Easy call here. He leads the team in batting average, homers, RBI, runs and all those dopey made-up Bill [...]
Time for the Stretch
Let me hear ya! A one ... a two ... a three ... The nearly nine-month journey that began in Mesa back in February has come to an end. There is no reason for me to rehash what went wrong for the 2009 Chicago Cubs ... you know what happened. You lived through every pitch of every inning just like I did. With that said, I truly believe that one person is not responsible for this past...
Cubs Fire Von Joshua
Milton Bradley hasn’t been the only scapegoat this season. Gerald Perry was fired earlier in the season and things never improved. His replacement has now been fired. Joshua was offered his old gig as hitting coach at Iowa. At least Derrek Lee understands.
‘‘I hate to say it, but hitting coach is overrated,’’ said Derrek Lee, the team’s top offensive performer...

CUBS IN BRIEF: Scales hoping he's here to stay
This season may be remembered as a disappointment for the Cubs, but for Bobby Scales, 2009 is when a door opened.

Story Lines
Randy Wells' rotation spot for next season is pretty secure, I would guess, but I'm sure he would like to end the year with a better than .500 record.
The Cubs, by the looks of it, looked terrible yesterday. Thank goodness, I didn't see anything.

Cubs rookie Wells mows down Diamondbacks 5-0

Cubs demote hitting coach Von Joshua
The disappointed Chicago Cubs wasted little time making a change, dropping hitting coach Von Joshua after Sunday's season finale while offering him a similar spot at Triple-A.
Series Preview: Cubs vs. Diamondbacks
OverviewWell it’s finally here. The end of the season.
As tough as this season as been on some of us, I’m personally not looking forward to the winter. Do I want to see the Cubs win? Of course, but baseball is baseball. It’s a great game that people all across the country can enjoy the same way. The weather is hot, the beers are cold, and the game is there for us almost everyday...
