If I were the Phillies, I would call up Stephen King and ask him to write about some other ballplayer. Tom Gordon has been more or less "cursed" since King wrote the book, "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" (1999). Maybe if he writes about someone else, the bad luck that has been brought on Gordon will be released, sort of like an exorcist of sorts. Or, maybe Gordon, at 40 years old, is just not up to the task, physically, to pitch in the role he currently finds himself in with the Phillies as their interim closer. He does, if I remember, have a tear somewhere in his pitching arm or should that was found just last year.

You may recall a post from mid-February where I criticized Tolegian's power rankings.
His updated power rankings were recently posted on FOX Sports and he snipes at Lidge again. He originally had the Phillies at #13 and knocked them down to #14 and dedicated almost the entire block of Phillies-related text to Lidge-bashing.

After yesterday's implosion, the Phillies are getting proactive in fixing their bullpen. The Phillies have signed veteran right-handed reliever Rudy Seanez. Seanez, 39, is not the savior for the bullpen, but rather a solid addition who strikes out batters at a high rate. Seanez spent last season with the Dodgers, who released him after he struggled this spring with a 7.71 ERA.

According to the LA Times, relief pitcher Rudy Seanez has been signed by the Phillies and will be activated in time for Wednesday's game. It's time to see if this guy can help the bullpen, after all I've been calling for him to be signed the past 3 seasons. Last year the bullpen nearly cost the Phillies a shot at the playoffs with the likes of Tom Gordon, Ryan Madson, Jose "Joe Table" Mesa, and Antonio "6-Finger Ant" Alfonseca. This season may turn out to be just as bad, as Pat Gillick put together the same crap of Gordon and Madson, but mixed in Tim Lahey, Clay Condrey, and Chad Durbin this time...Deja Vu?

In their season opener, the Phillies pitching came up small. In today's 1-0 loss to the Washington Nationals, their pitching was excellent, but their bats were nowhere to be found. The Phillies managed just one hit off of Nationals starting pitcher Tim Redding and relievers Luis Ayala and Jon Rauch. Redding didn't have overpowering stuff, as evidenced by his 2 strikeouts...

The NY Mets are sure glad they got Johan Santana today as Pedro Martinez told manager Willie Randolph that he might have heard a "pop" in his hammy on that last pitch he threw. Barring a miracle, it looks as if Mr. Martinez might be going back on the DL. The question is, will it be the 15 day variety or longer? Good thing they didn't trade Jorge Sosa as some reports...
