It's getting so bad that I'm beginning to think Brian Schneider deserves to be traded to a contender. Strangely enough, our lone power bat of the weekend actually is on a contender, through no fault of his teammates. Your depleted, disabled, demoralized, depressing New York Mets have lost 12 of 18, yet sit no more than 2 games from first place in their division. Will wonders and helpful American East League combatants ever cease? Can't speak for the former and we know we have the latter working on our behalf for only another week. Bon Rayage to our friends from Tampa Bay as they set sail for three dates at home versus their October 2008 nemeses the Phillies. If the Rays, who zapped us Sunday, can do what the Orioles did — sweep Philadelphia — all will be forgiven from this soggy weekend. Then it's the Blue Jays' turn to reinforce the lessons of 1993. After a fashion, however, we'll probably have to stop relying on others to get our job of staying close ...

Mets Adopt the Junkyard Dog’s Theme Song as their Own

The Mets beat St. Louis 6-4 last night, but enough of that happy talk. This is the Mets so of course we have much more ominous news to unravel as another star bit the dust in Flushing. Carlos Beltran was the latest, and in my mind the most irreplaceable, player to join the MASH Unit that is the New [...]

The End Of Tatis

It is time for the Mets to say good-bye to Fernando Tatis. He is showing his old swing that kept him out of baseball for two years. It seems as though he either strikes out or hits into a double...

Ailing Mets put Beltran on DL with bone bruise

Carlos Beltran is going on the disabled list, an enormous blow to a struggling New York Mets team already decimated by key injuries. The All-Star center fielder was placed on the 15-day DL on Monday because of a bone bruise on his right knee - the same injury that sidelined him for a couple of games in late May. An MRI exam Monday showed the bruise has gotten worse. Beltran...

Mets DFA Wilson Valdez

Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports that the Mets designated Wilson Valdez for assignment to make room for pitchers Elmer Dessens and Pat Misch. The roster shuffle comes partially because Carlos Beltran is headed for the DL. In 26 plate appearances for the Mets, Valdez hit .208/.269/.333. The 31-year-old played both middle infield positions.

Carlos Beltran: I am Worried About MRI

As if the news couldn’t get any worse for Mets fans this came via Dave Lennon’s Twitter. Carlos Beltran on tomorrow’s exam/MRI: “I’m a little bit worried to be honest because the way I felt today – it was painful.” More from Howard and I on tonight’s show at 9:30 PM var a = Math.floor(Math.random()*9999999999+1) var random_number [...]

Throwback

Well, it's official. With the news that Carlos Beltran is now on the disabled list, joining his friends Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado, the offense will be more of a 19th century offense. It was a simpler time where home runs came at a premium due to the fact that everyone was smaller and, as seen from the photo above, there were no walls.Citi Field has walls but you have to take...

John Maine and Oliver Perez will make rehab starts Monday at Port St. Lucie

NEW YORK -- Monday night could go a long way in determining how quickly the depleted Mets starting rotation is back to full strength. Both John Maine and Oliver Perez will pitch for Single-A Port St. Lucie on Monday. Each...

Live updates: Rays vs. Mets

The Rays take on Johan Santana and the Mets this afternoon in the second test of a three-game series.

Jose Reyes Gets Rear-Ended By Enormous Red Machine

At this point, there are very few calamities that could befall the New York Mets that are outrageous enough to cause me to question their veracity. In other words, the Mets can't stop stepping in dogshit. The latest incident involves already-injured shortstop Jose Reyes, a firetruck, and some hot rear-ending action that the Mets tried oh-so-hard to keep under wraps. Seems that...

Jays' Marco Scutaro Steals Second On A Walk

Marco Scutaro made Jimmy Rollins, Joe Blanton, Chase Utley and basically the rest of the Philadelphia Phillies roster look foolish during the third inning last Thursday. Scutaro drew a walk from Blanton, a routine play that normally sees the play take his base without much in the way of pomp and circumstance. But Scutaro, seeing a Phillies infield that seemed asleep at the wheel...

The Mets Need Scott Hairston

It's true. They need a center fielder that can hit lefties, and that's Scott Hairston. Or Jason Michaels. And those guys will cost a lot less than players like Aubrey Huff and Nick Johnson, who might be useless once Carlos Delgado returns.

Ailing Mets slow Pujols, beat Cardinals 6-4

Tim Redding pitched into the eighth inning for his first win with the Mets and substitute setup man Brian Stokes got Albert Pujols to ground into a crucial double play, leading New York past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 on Monday night.
