As is always true around this time of year, the news feeds are full of trade rumors saying this player is going to that team, etc.  The Mets have found themselves in the middle of these talks for the past few years, but seem to be keeping quiet this season.  Maybe they feel like they’re too far out already. Maybe I agree with them. There were some rumors that the Blue Jays offered up Roy Halladay, the stud that most of this year’s rumors have been swirling around, for four of the Mets top prospects, but those rumors were squashed by the Mets organization. If the offer were actually on the table, I felt that it was a mistake for the Mets not to jump on it, but there’s no point in discussing it any further. The truth is, except for what has been an emergency situation, the Mets have made a lot of noise, but not a lot of trades at the trade deadline in recent history. Their just missing the World Series three seasons ago, followed by their major and minor co...

General Disarray

"Some of you people oughta go find another way of living." -Bobby Knight, January 18th, 2000I think Russ Ortiz would be wise to listen to Coach Knight.Seriously, Ortiz is a pitcher that the Mets have owned recently. But even I wasn't naive enough to start getting excited on Saturday because of Ortiz's recent history against the Mets, since the recent injuries heaved...

My In-Depth Look At Jeff Francoeur

The Mets acquired Francoeur from the Braves on July 10, 2009 in exchange for Ryan Church. This is an in depth look comparing Jeff Francoeur's 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Chances of Halladay and other trades.. from Marty Noble

I was looking on Mets.com and I noticed Marty Noble's mailbag that it had some interesting Q/A's from fans. Here are some of them: Let's be realistic, the 2009 Mets should become Trade Deadline sellers. Contending teams like the Rays and Cardinals may be interested in bullpen help like Pedro Feliciano, Brian Stokes or Sean Green for much-needed prospects. -- Bill...

Angel Pagan Is Earning His Wings

Carlos Beltran had been playing with injuries throughout most of the early season.  He occasionally had to miss a few games due to these aches and pains, but continued to play his way into the lineup with his hot start.  When Beltran could not take the pain anymore in June, he became the latest casualty [...]

METS TALK SHEFFIELD ONTO SHELF

HOUSTON -- It took some doing, but the Mets finally got Gary Sheffield to accept his trip to the disabled list yesterday. The move seemed to be long overdue with Sheffield unable to play since July 17 because of cramping in his right hamstring...

Rockies 8, Giants 2 / Rockies roll out decisive victory

Trading Jonathan Sanchez largely became moot with his July 10 no-hitter. How could general manager Brian Sabean make a move like that? How could ownership sign off on it? Sabean confirmed the obvious on KNBR on Friday when he said the Giants need Sanchez,...

Hernandez overcomes shaky start, Mets top Astros

Livan Hernandez struck out a season-high seven after a rough start, and the New York Mets put together another well-balanced offensive performance in an 8-3 win over the Houston Astros on Sunday.

Overheard Outside the Last Chance Cafe

"You again?" "C'mon, let me in." "You're not on the list." "I can't get on the list unless you let me in." "Then you're not getting in." "Check it again." "I've checked it every day for weeks. You're not on it." "Take a closer look...toward the bottom." "Sigh, all...

Constant roster changes take a toll on NY Mets' clubhouse chemistry

HOUSTON -- They sat in sofa chairs only a couple feet apart, but said nothing to each other. Oliver Perez flipped through People magazine. Elmer Dessens read Sports Illustrated. They sat like this for more than 10 minutes Friday, like...

Can the New York Mets Finally Make a Meaningful Deadline Deal?

New York Mets (45-51) at Houston Astros (50-47), 2:05 p.m.

Cuban veteran Livan Hernandez tries to make it two straight wins since ending a four-start losing streak today, when the New York Mets visit Minute Maid Park in the third and final game of a three-game series with the Houston Astros.

Odds & Ends: Sheffield, Washburn, Pirates, Irabu

Some links to start your Sunday morning off right... MLB.com's Anthony DiComo says not to assume Gary Sheffield will be traded. Sheff is currently on the disabled list, but may have been attractive to contenders in need of a bat because he can still produce (.286-.388-.481 in 245 PA) and the Tigers are paying pretty much his entire salary. Bob Klapisch of The...
