TEAMS: New York Mets
It's safe to say that for the New York Mets' players, fans and front office, the season to date has not gone according to plan. Expectations -like the payroll- are very high and the vision Mets supporters had in the spring has not matched the reality of the present. The preferred blueprint would have included among other things: a healthy Moises Alou batting in the middle of the line-up and driving in runs, Aaron Heilman returning to his 2006 form and teaming up with Duaner Sanchez to dominate the 7th and 8th innings, Luis Castillo providing steady defense at second base and Ryan Church adding depth and pop to the bottom of the batting order.
Well, that blueprint has gone up in flames.
While hovering around .500 for what seems like forever, the Mets have, out of necessity changed course. For better or worse, the Mets hopes now hinge on a group of role players now asked to do more than what was originally expected of them. Whether its due to injuries (Alou, Castillo, Church) or ineffectiveness, (Heilman) Damion Easley, Fernando Tatis and Joe Smith among others have been thrust into key roles that will determine if the Mets will go to the playoffs or go home when the calender turns to October.
So far these unlikely heroes have been up to the task. Damion Easley, seeing increased playing time due to Castillo's cranky knees, has been one of the Mets hottest hitters, batting .364 over the last 30 days and .440 in July. As part of the meltdown that affected the entire bullpen last season, Joe Smith wasn't expected to make the roster coming out of spring training. After coming on strong toward the end of camp, he seemed slated for long relief and mop-up duty. When Aaron Heilman began to give up homeruns at the worst possible times, Smith became the right-handed specialist and occasional 8th inning bridge to closer Billy Wagner. Although Smith had some rough moments in June where he pitched to an ERA of 4.50, he has gotten off to a strong start in July, allowing only one run so far in five innings of work. Fernando Tatis is the most surprising contributor. After losing out to Brady Clark for one of the final spots on the roster in the spring, Tatis was called up to Flushing in May to add depth to an depleted bench. With Alou and Church both spending more time on the disabled list than on the field, Tatis has filled in at both corner oufield spots. While his overall numbers haven't been earth shattering, Tatis has shown a flair for the dramatic with two game winning hits to date.
Can these spare parts continue at this pace? It doesn't seem likely. Easley in his 18th season as a major leaguer could break down at any moment. Joe Smith's second half collapse still lingers. The last time Tatis played more than 50 Major League Baseball games, it was for a team named the Montreal Expos. With that said, losing a 7 game lead with 17 games left didn't seem likely.
It's obvious that the Mets cannot win with only Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran. And there is no guaruntee that the high profile supporting cast members like Castillo, Church or Alou will be healthy or productive enough to have a significant impact on this season. So the Mets trudge on as they attempt to get back in the race for the National League East, taking a route they didn't plan, but is the only one available.

Shades Of ‘86
My apologies for getting all misty eyed at the news Keith Hernandez being involved in some recent midair Mets hijinx. Now if only in the next week I would hear reports of a coked up Wally Backman stumbling out of a bathroom or Rafael Santana falling asleep with his dick out of his pants….
Theo Epstein, Omar Minaya: No Interest in Bonds
After speculation in print that the Red Sox had expressed interest in Barry Bonds,GM Theo Epstein wasted no time shooting down that rumor. He said there was nothing to the speculation. Bonds agent, Jeff Borris released a statement saying there had been no contact from anyone within the Mets organization pertaining to his client, Bonds. Minaya stopped short of saying there was...

According to Kathianne Boniello at the New York Post, a fan hit by a flying bat at Shea Stadium during a Mets-Braves game in August of 2007 is planning on filing a lawsuit for the medical damages.
Just Short- Phils
Phils tried to make a huge comeback over the Mets last night, but failed and came up just short (that's what she said). The comeback attempt was entertaining, but in the end it's still a loss and therefore doesn't really matter then.
Adam Eaton was the main culprit for the loss. Stats since joining the Phils- 38 games started, 13-17 record, 262 IP, 309 H, 171 ER...
No Church On Sunday....
What? No Church on Sunday, or any other day? Of course, I'm talking about the Mets' Ryan Church, and why the Mets ought to consider sitting him down in his own pew...
Phillies rally to win 3-2; Happ holds his own
Shane Victorino knocked in Pedro Feliz with a walk-off RBI single in the ninth, as the Phillies and their steadfast bullpen overcame a 2-0 deficit to outlast Johan Santana and the rival Mets at Citizens Bank Park. With his pitch count still at 95, Mets skipper Jerry Manuel elected to remove Santana, who had been dominant except for a pair of Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell RBI singles...
Phils lose; C.C. the Brewer; Cole snubbed; vote Pat
There's plenty to discuss on a busy Monday morning. Here's a synopsis. Game summary: The Phillies lost to the Mets 4-2 in 12 innings in a game that included a 2 hour and 50 minute rain delay. The Phils needed a miracle two-out, two-run Jayson Werth home run off Billy Wagner in the bottom of the ninth to get it that far, but in the end, it all boiled down to two things. First...
Democracy doesn't work
The All-Star rosters have been announced and, as usual, the fans, coaches and players have made some odd choices. The only Met on the National League roster is Billy Wagner. Johan Santana, top five in the league in ERA and strikeouts, didn't make the cut. David Wright (.288/.385/.508, 137 OPS+) couldn't beat out Aramis Ramirez (.280/.379/.493, 126 OPS+) for the backup...

The Phillies (47-39) lead New York (42-43) by 4.5 games in the National League East standings. Santana has not won a game since June 1, but has been the recipient almost no run support. Pedro
Pedro Martinez isn't the Mets' ace, anymore. That title, for the foreseeable future, belongs to Johan Santana, although an old friend is making waves across town. But he can pitch like it tonight.Pedro was really only the Mets' ace for that woefully underrated 2005 season, where he wowed stat folks (a ridiculous .949 WHIP) and goofy old traditionalists (4 complete games...
Game chat: Phillies try to solve Mets' Maine
Right-hander John Maine (8-6, 3.86) is 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA in seven starts against the Phillies, and is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two starts Citizens Bank Park. The Phils hope for better luck and try to make it five in a row when Jamie Moyer (7-6, 4.13) takes the mound tonight. First pitch is 7:05. The Phils hold a 3.5 game edge over Florida in the National League East and are 5.5 up on the Mets.
The Players Can Suck It
All-Star Voting really isn't meaningful. I know that. And the Mets have been the beneficiary of some generous fan voting in recent years. But the most recent selections are a disgusting travesty. And the guys to the right are pissed off (or should be).Not only are Kosuke Fukudome and Alfonso Soriano starting outfielders (Soriano ranks ninth among NL left fielders! in VORP, and...
