The Phillies look to defend their first World Series crown in almost three decades and to do so they will first need to exhume one last ghost. After erasing the sting of the collapse of 1964 by twice coming back on the New York Mets, and then by capturing the first championship in the city of brotherly love in a quarter century, the Phillies now must dispatch of the team that thwarted them at the beginning of this string of playoff appearances.Yes, these are different teams compared to the two that paired up two Octobers ago. The Phillies and Rockies both have new players but many of the names are still familiar. But it would be ridiculous to compare the 2007 teams and the 2009 teams. Both are so different now it is not fair to think back to the 2007 post season and say this is a revenge situation.
The revenge situation ended when the Phillies won the World Series last October.
Gone are the names like Pat Burrell, Kyle Lohse, and Jose Mesa (who was unceremoniously booed off the field at Citizens Bank Park in game two of the 2007 NLDS). Gone is Rockies MVP candidate Matt Holliday (some guy named Jimmy Rollins took that honor that season).
Forget what happened two years ago because it means nothing this time around. The Phillies are a much improved team from 2007. Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels are your starters in the first two games. In 2007 Kyle Kendrick was the game two starter, behind Hamels. Jamie Moyer was the game three starter that year. This time around it looks to be Pedro Martinez.
The lineup is better too. Shane Victorino has improved and Jayson Werth has taken a stride forward. Ryan Howard is still Ryan Howard and Chase Utley is still Chase Utley. Raul Ibanez may be better than Pat Burrell. Jimmy Rollins may not be what the 2007 Rollins was, but he is still no slouch.
This Phillies team is better than that Phillies team. And these Rockies, although entering on a bit of an upswing, do not have the same magic that Rockies team did.
But we will wait to see what each team has to offer tomorrow.
First pitch, 2:37pm.

NLDS countdown: Big Piece more than one big tool
Two weeks ago in a Beerleaguer poll, readers named Chase Utley team MVP, but if voting were held today, would Ryan Howard, who completed his most multidimensional season yet, come out on top? Last night on the drive home, ESPN radio’s Mike Missanelli called Howard one of the most unappreciated Phillies in history, a sentiment shared by a number of readers who feel the Big Piece...
Fall of society creeps nearer with dispute over Howard's baseball
Another week, another argument over the ownership of a home run ball. This time, the conflict involves Phillies slugger Ryan Howard(notes), who's currently busy helping Philly defend its world title. But despite kicking off that defense with a win on Wednesday, Howard's name appeared in the day's headlines because a 12-year-old Florida girl sued the Phillies to regain...
"Ohhhhh... He Dropped It!"
The Phillies didn't disappoint on Wednesday and entertained those of us in attendance. Before the game, I told my 83-year old grandfather that I had standing room only for the game and he said "whenever they show that Ashburn Alley on TV, they seem to keep it pretty loose out there." Oh, we kept it loose. Here's a video of Ryan Howard's double to left as captured...
Video: NLDS Game 1 Slideshow
This is a video slide show of assorted photos, both by me and from the AP (I think you'll pick up on which ones are mine). The choice in song was inspired by the recent news (HT: The 700 Level) that Jimmy Rollins and the Phillies listen to Jay-Z's album, The Blueprint 3, in the locker room everyday.Look for more video slide shows in the future.
Major League Baseball Hates You
I probably watched about 120 Phillies games this year. I missed a few due to work or vacation or hangovers but even some of those that I didn’t watch I followed on radio or the internet. And I know that there are some of you out there who got pretty close to seeing all 162. Congratulations on that.We got to see some pretty great things this year. The early season breakout of Raul...
How To Beat The Phillies
In three easy steps!
1. Don’t let Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth or Raul Ibanez beat you
That’s all.
I know that doesn’t sound like much to ask of your pitching staff, but if you can just hold all those guys in check, you’ll significantly enhance your chances for victory.
2. Get behind early
You don’t want to...

Playoff Liveglog Club: NLDS, Rockies at Phillies, Game 1
A while back Wezen-Ball posted a 1950 article that complained about the new breed of baseball player that didn't care about the team and only played for the money. "One of his greater ambitions in baseball is to endorse a cigarette," Bob Considine wrote in Baseball Digest, "though he might not smoke a pack during an entire season." In other words, the problem...

Just One Hit
The Phillies get a hit from Victorino, but that’s it as Aaron Cook strikes out Ryan Howard looking to end the bottom of the first.
