Over the last couple of months, I have noticed that Red Sox fans seem to be losing attention to the team. Tickets are harder to sell off if you can't make a game. Comments on Red Sox blogs have dropped. We are in mid-September, atop the wild card lead by only two games, and it seems as if Red Sox Nation is in a collective funk -- myself included. What's going on? This season has certainly been trying -- one of the more trying ones that I can remember in recent memory. We started the season hot. The Sox were on top of the world and nothing could go wrong. Then the pieces started breaking off. Daisuke Matsuzaka would go on to have a lost season. David Ortiz's slump just kept going... and going... and going. One by one, the vaunted pitching depth got so bad that we had to drag Paul Byrd out of retirement. The Yankees had a light turn on in late May that has yet to turn off as they have been playing what feels to be and probably is .700 ball since. The offens...

Byrd flies again, Sox send O's to Road Kill Cafe

Paul Byrd regained the form he displayed in his 1st start again in tonight’s contest against the AL birds, the Orioles. He went 5 innings, scattering 6 hits, and allowing only 2 runs. He left the game with a 3-2 lead. Manny Delcarmen enters the game and promptly but uncharacteristically earned his 3rd blown save of the season: 1/3 IP, 2 H’s, 1 BB, and 2 runs. Tonight’s road...

Dice-K Looks Ready, Wake on Hold

Daisuke Matsuzaka looked like a pitcher ready to return to the majors after last night's rehab game with the Salem Red Sox. He pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and a walk, he struck out 7 batters; giving him a victory in the Carolina League playoff game. Look for Dice-K's next start to be with the big club in place of Paul Byrd or Tim Wakefield.Wake is...

Major move: Matsuzaka will start Tuesday

It has been nearly three months, one major misunderstanding, and quite a few pounds since Daisuke Matsuzaka last took the mound for the Red Sox. That was on June 19, an outing in which he allowed six runs in just four innings, sending him on an odyssey that has taken him through Fort Myers, Fla., and much of the minor ...

In The Silo: Salem Sweeps Into Carolina League Finals With Consecutive Extra-Inning Victories

The Salem Red Sox returned home from North Carolina having won the first two games of their Carolina League playoff series against the Winston-Salem Dash (CWS) thanks in large part to the pitching of starters Daisuke Matsuzaka and Kyle Weiland. They arrived in Virginia in the wee hours of Friday morning after taking a 6-4 [...]

*Insert Clever Game Thread Title Here*

I believe that my worst attribute relating to this site, by far, is thinking up clever titles. Either I can't do it or I just don't care enough to find puns. Whatever.:oTITS GTDaisuke Matsuzaka is a lucky asshole.

What to Do With Daisuke, The Transformation of Lester

What to Do With Daisuke? As the Boston Red Sox get set for their weekend series against Tampa Bay, embattled starter Daisuke Matsuzaka gets prepared for a return to the Red Sox rotation. Under any normal circumstances, the answer would be simple: bench him. But these are not normal circumstances. The dream of sending Daisuke to the pine, alive and kickin' since his...

The Red Sox are trying to ride Paul Byrd and Tim Wakefield to a playoff spot? Tracy Ringosby documents other contenders with issues.

Byrd Would Consider Pitching Next Year

After a pair of disappointing starts, Paul Byrd helped the Red Sox beat the Orioles last night. His numbers to date aren't good, though the sample size is admittedly small. The 38-year-old righty has started three games for the Red Sox and has allowed 19 hits and six walks in 13.1 innings, striking out five. Still, Byrd tells WEEI.com's Rob Bradford that he would consider...

This one was a bit more work than may have been needed but it got the job done. The Sox had some chances early to put some big numbers up against Baltimore starter Jason Berken but he got some defense and hung...

They Didn't Break

A few weeks back I wrote this post: Make or Break TimeAfter yesterday's off day the Red Sox are now ready to begin a tough stretch that will determine if they will be playing golf or baseball when the regular season ends. They will play 22 games in a row against the Jays, Yankees, White Sox, Rays and O's before the next off day. 12 of those games will be at home. With...

Martinez, Smith Propel Wild Card Leaders to Victory

Starting pitcher Paul Byrd gave the Wild Card-leading Boston Red Sox five solid innings and left with a slim 3-2 lead. As Byrd neared the end of his outing, Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Jason Hammel took the mound in the first inning against the Cincinnati Reds. Both teams are fighting for their lives in this season’s final month. Boston entered play with a 1 1/2 game...
