It's not that hard. The team inexplicably makes money despite having a fan base that hates it. Erik Bedard, the team's best pitcher wants out, by all accounts. Maybe he and Aubrey Huff had a bad experience.

do u think the o's can really get santana
    • cincysportsart
yeah, i'd say santana's a little out of the o's "spending limits". besides, in order to get him, they'd have to trade some really big chunks of their team -- almost undoubtedly markakis, and possibly billy rowell -- and that's probably just to get things started. i would imagine bedard would have to be included in there as well, but might be able to get away with bedard, rowell, and some other prospects -- but would have to be some top tier prospects. i just don't see it happening...the o's would rather pay some young guys a lot less money, than going out and bringing in some higher pay scale guys.

Can they? I seriously doubt it. Should they try just to front like they care about winning? Absolutely.

well i think they should keep bedard and build around him. pitching is hard to find

But Bedard wants to skip town after this year when he is a free agent. No one wants to play in Baltimore because of Peter Angelos. Shouldn't they get something for him now?

Tough call Dewey, If there is no chance they will sign him, then they should surely trade him.

well playin against a lot i dont think theyre as bad as everyone thinks but if hes not happy then they have to find a way to make him happy cause he's one of the best. but from the o's stand point u have to make moves i guess
  • I doubt they can get Santana. Santana has a clause in his contract that basically allows him to dictate which team he wants to go to, and he wants to go to a sure winner like the Yankees or Red Sox. Also, the Orioles are a mid-market team. Do they really have the money to pay Santana?

Good point D-Train, It's unfortunate the Marlins are unwilling to pay anybody.

Please call the Twins' owner and tell him to spend some cash money!

yeah its hard becasue i thnk that no matter who they get no one will come to the games
    • You are right. I'm from SoFla. You are dealing with displaced New Yorkers for the most part, and bandwagoners. When we had girardi and made a run, no one really showed up. If it were a playoff game then people would show up.
But, it also is important to know that its not just the marlins D. If you really look at home heat games unless its a sunday afternoon game against a big team the arena rarely is that full, especially the lower bowl.
Its a culture thing I think down in sofla, that people think that they have better things to do rather than going to see a game that they've already paid for.
Except for football (excluding this season), it's hard to make the case that south florida is a "sports town"...

If only Steve Bischiotti(Ravens owner) or Cal Ripken were able to buy them from Angelos. We'll be bad as long as he's here.

why do u think angelos is bad

He wields too heavy a hand, in my opinion. He is a trial lawyer, not a baseball guy. He should sign the checks and let a baseball guy make baseball decisions.

For many years the O's have not had a true GM, and too often it is Angelos calling the shots on personnel decisions. For the past decade, word from those in baseball has been that Baltimore is a difficult front office to work with, and that it is because of Angelos.

I've been an O's fan my whole life, but it may be time for a new owner. They haven't had a winning season since 1997. I'd like to see Cal Ripken buy the team.

        I whole heartedly agree.

Angelos has been making bad deals and worst deals, starting with kris benson, then Miggy (which they over paid), they might still be paying Albert belle from back in the days (he was good for a few years, but after that injury he wasnt worth it anymore). They should develop a good farm system like the A's do or even the Marlins. Thats the best way to go if teams want to win.
    • Angelos hasn't let the GM to his job. He wouldn't let them trade Tejada two years back even though, it would have been a great deal for the Orioles. Since he has taken over the team the Orioles went from one of the finest run teams to one of the worst. Angelos does just enough each year to make it look like he is trying to improve the team but never enough to actually get somewhere.

A 80 mil salary with overpaid FA isn't the answer...if you want to go the FA route you would need to spend 120+ mil...I don't think the O's should do that but that is what it would take with the minor lg system they have now

INSTEAD I think the Orioles should trade Tejada and any other vets they can get good value out of for good minor league talents. GO back to the Orioles Way, build up the minor league system and get players who enjoy the game. We don't have to spend as much money that way because we will use cheaper younger players so with the money that is not spent on the average players we were signing before (they will be replaced by cheaper, younger players) we can go after an ACTUAL big name FA that is worth millions. Little signings like Huff, Walker, Bradford, etc. are pointless, they make too much money and aren't a big improvement over some minor league talent.
  • Mizzo89
Well, I can't fill you in too much, but just some things. He's way too cheap, and doesn't try to improve the team. Ever since buying the team back whenever(90s?) we've made the playoffs once, and in my memory, never. Sucks, in 3rd grade I had the Ravens win a Superbowl and I've still yet to see the Orioles in the playoffs.

You know somethings wrong when a former player is trying to get a group together and buy the team.
  • There is no chance the Orioles get Santana. The Twins want top prospects and young MLB players not making much money. Look at who the Orioles have to offer...nothing close to the prospects the Sox/Yanks can put up. And why morgage our future for Santana when we probably wouldn't even stiff the playoffs with him? The Orioles need to stop trying to make a move in the offseason to "win now" and stop signing mediocre FA. They can't keep up with the Sox/Yanks in the FA area so we need to invest in the minors. It makes no sense at all to trade our young players for a SP that will just get us over .500 and nothing else.
