TEAMS: New York Mets

How ironic. In a move to throw a bone to an angry fan base, Mets ownership paints the bull's eye squarely on their own classless and clueless faces. Fred, Jeff, congratulations: You are well on your way to cementing your legacy as the most beloved baseball executives in New York since Walter O'Malley. After enduring weeks upon weeks of Willie Watch, which grew to a crescendo over the weekend when SI.com's Jon Heyman reported on Friday that Willie and/or his coaching staff could be out of work as soon as that evening, Mets management allowed their manager a Father's Day split and even paid his plane fare to Los Angeles - how generous - before dispatching GM Omar Minaya to finally mercifully (mercilessly) lower the ax... following a 9-6 road victory over the AL West division-leading Angels. You can't make it up. You can't even wrap your mind around it. It's mindless, it's senseless, and it stinks like shit. This morning on MetsBlog.com, Matt Cerrone writes that he is "convinced information was intentionally leaked to the media [last week] in an effort to force Omar Minaya's hand." If Matt's suspicions are correct - and I trust his instincts here - then what else can be said? Words fall short. Disingenuous? Gutless? Classless? None of them do this situation justice. Pig vomit. That's how I'd describe it. Putrid, stinking pig vomit. In the last ten months this franchise has engineered a collapse of historic proportions, invested $150 million in a pitcher scouts believe is on the back end of his career, completely bungled and jeopardized the health of their top performer this season, and now, this. And make no mistake, this is entirely about 2007. Because Jeff Wilpon wanted blood after the way last season ended, and Omar Minaya was able to protect and insulate his manager. But in the end, Jeff got his way, and we shouldn't have expected anything less from a middle-age brat choking on his father's money. So there you have it. The Mets are a disgrace. A Mickey Mouse organization, as Wayne Gretzky once famously called the Jersey Devils. So, have at it, Yankee fans. My brethren and I are at your mercy - and Scott Kazmir is no longer the low point of our fandom.

Jose Reyes - He's No Jimmy Rollins…

The New York Mets continue to try and challenge the Knicks for the title of most dysfunctional team in New York. A day after firing manager Willie Randolph, Jose Reyes is making his own headlines by throwing a tantrum in Anaheim. After leading off the game with a single, Reyes appeared to be walking a little gingerly around the first base bag. Interim manager Jerry Manuel (no...

Willie Randolph Axed After Win

Willie Randolph has been fired as manager and replaced by bench coach Jerry Manuel. This news coming around 3:15 EST, not long after the team had defeated the LA Angels 9-6. The news isn't that surprising, especially since Omar Minaya has essentially been saying it was going to happen for the past week. Happy trails, Willie. I'm sure you'll get a new job managing another team pretty soon.

Host Tim Russert conducts first interview since his death, grills Wilpons and exposes their "inconsistencies."

The New York Mets fired Willie Randolph in a 3 AM press release after winning on the road the night before. Hmm, which politician does that remind me of...

The Mets Didn't Fire Randolph; Everyone Else Did

Willie Randolph has been fired, and he has the Internet to thank. And sports talk radio. And the newspapers. And the TV people. New York Mets GM Oscar Minaya? He's the least culpable, ironically -- though he's the guy who pulled the trigger, or to be more accurate, the plug. Randolph, the now deposed Mets manager, was taken off life support at the rather symbolic time...

Ken Oberkfell named Mets bench coach

Known maybe more for his beard then his on field performances the much acclaimed if not legendary king of 80's baseball cards is expected to be named the new bench coach of the New York Mets following Tuesdays departure of manager Willie Randolph.

Mystery Solved

For years, nobody has been able to understand why the Mets traded Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. The trade defies all logic and reason. Fittingly, BBTF commenter Srul Itza has finally come up with an appropriate explanation: Maybe nobody on the Mets approved the trade. Somebody on the Rays called up as a joke and said they were confirming the trade of Kazmir for Zambrano. Since...

Breaking: Randolph May or may Not Be Fired

A sarcastic post showing just how silly the Randolph firing/non-firing has become.

Let's Go Mets! (Turn The Page)

Yes the organization is a mess, but let's turn the page and hope for greatness under Jerry Manuel's leadership.

Most Important Ray?

Our own Kevin Gengler took part in a Rays blog 'round table' of sorts at Rays Anatomy. The question was which Ray is the most important to the team's future success; the answers included David Price (twice), Jake McGee, Carl Crawford, B.J. Upton, and Gengler's pick of Scott Kazmir, but my answer woul...

Solution for All-Star Game Pitching Issues

Most of this comes from a comment I made when Sports Dawg wrote on An Opinion On Sports about expanding the All-Star rosters after Clint Hurdle and Terry Francona nearly had to use David Wright and J.D. Drew as pitchers due to a limited number of innings available from the All-Star pitchers. Sports Dawg isn't the only one to make the suggestion as I've heard a lot of people...

Speechless.

Rays 10, Indians 7 (box) Eric. Please. Please. Please. Just let Rafael Perez be your closer. Yes, the bullpen as a whole is God awful. Epic fail. I get that. But when you have yet another quality start by Jeremy Sowers (who was overmatched on paper against Scott Kazmir), you simply cannot allow your 'pen to blow this game. Yes, I know that Perez had already tossed...
