Yuniesky Betancourt is a unique player. As the great Rob Neyer pointed out this morning, Betancourt has 0 walks in 25 games this season; a statistic that seems almost hard to believe considering the sabermetric age we live in.After looking at Betancourt's 2009 stats, I noticed that his batting average is actually higher than his OBP. I honestly never thought that this was possible. Almost every baseball player has a higher OBP than batting average because batting Average counts only Hits, while OBP includes not only hits, but walks and hit by pitch as well. But upon further review, I discovered that this was entirely possible and that Brewers catcher Mike Rivera was another member of the "higher OBP than batting average" club. But Rivera only has 13 at bats, which is nothing compared to the 91 at bats that Betancourt has so far.So what is the reason why a batting average can be lower than OBP? Looking closer at MLS and MLB cities

This year’s baseball season is shaping up to have more MLS cities in contention than in past years.  The Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners are off to really good starts, and this is not good news for MLS.  Currently, both teams sit in first place of their respective divisions.  These two cities have drawn better at [...] Related posts:Taking advantage of dropping...

O’s CF Jones Living Up to Potential

We all know that one month of success does not make a season, but early returns indicate that Baltimore Orioles centerfielder Adam Jones is indeed the real deal. When the Orioles traded ace starting pitcher Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners for a cast of players highlighted by Jones, there were many skeptics questioning whether the then-22-year-old outfielder could parlay the...

The Argument to Keep Yuni Betancourt at Shortstop

I absoluetly advocated the removal of Yuniesky Betancourt from the shortstop position after watching him make error after error while playing defense. Sabermetricians had me convinced as well. But after reading this, I think my opinion on Yuni has changed. With a struggling and below-average offense, I think Yuni might be a necessary evil. From Seattle Sportsnet: Yeah, Betancourt...
