New York Yankees first-year manager Aaron Boone on Wednesday indicated the team will exercise patience with Aaron Judge as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery.

“We’ll try and go slow with him,” Boone said, via Newsday.

Judge is off a fantastic 2017 campaign in which he won AL Rookie of the Years honors and came in second in AL MVP voting. The then slugger underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder in November. Hence, Boone sees no reason to push Judge too hard early on in spring training.

“Certainly coming off, albeit a minor thing, but having the long season and shorter offseason and for him all he had to go through, we’ll as much as we can pull the reigns on him a little bit,” Boone said. “I’ve already talked to him and obviously he’s chomping to get out there, he just wants to get out there and play. But we’ll be smart with him. He’ll probably go slower than others, no doubt.”

Judge, addressing the media also on Wednesday, revealed that he began experiencing issues with his left shoulder shortly after the All-Star Break.

“Midway through the season (it happened) but it came down to can you play and I could play,” Judge said. “… I felt it would be best to do (the surgery) offseason.”

Given that was about the time Judge went into a slump at the plate in hindsight should come as no surprise.

Judge, however, seems eager to get ready for a 2018 campaign in which the Yankees are legitimate contenders.

Boone later reiterated that the Yankees will be careful with Judge despite the 25-year-old’s eagerness to ramp up his training.

“He’s good, I think it’s just a matter of wanting to take it slow,” Boone said. “I don’t need him getting three at-bats on February whatever. We’ll just be smart in how we go about it. There’s time to where he can get those regular at-bats to be in a place where we need him to be when we break camp at the end of next month.”
