ESPN Insider’s Jim Bowden tweets that the Dodgers are nearing an agreement with free agent right-hander Aaron Harang. Dylan Hernandez just tweeted the Dodgers and Harang are "very close." With Chris Capuano already in the fold, this would slide Harang into the rotation as the fifth starter.

The first thing I like about this deal is it puts Nate Eovaldi into an insurance spot in the rotation. I think Eovaldi has the ability to be better than Harang and Capuano, but now he is not going to be forced to and I like the safe move here. More than likely we will see Eovaldi anyway because between Lilly, Capuano, and Harang, one if not all three of these guys eventually will hit the disabled list. So I'm going to quickly point out that the Dodgers got Capuano and Harang for the price of Kuroda. Will this move pay off? Who knows? Both Harang and Capuano are 33 so you gotta like that. There are pros and cons everywhere you look on all three of these guys. Colletti played the odds here, and history shows Colletti is the most unlucky guy on the planet, but time will certainly tell.

No word on the financial aspects of the deal, but I am imagining Harang makes less than $5MM in 2012. Harang, 33, made only $3.5MM in 2011, and in 170 2/3 innings pitched, he posted an ERA of 3.64/WHIP 1.37/124 strikeouts, and a 14-7 record in the hitter friendly confines of Petco Park. If Harang can put up similar numbers for the Dodgers in 2012, hanging out in the pitcher friendly Chavez Ravine, and manage to not spend any significant time on the disabled list he could be a diamond in the rough for the Dodgers.

I like the deal, I know I know, not a lot of Harang supporters out there. Harang could be a third or fourth starter for a lot of teams out there, and for the value and what the Dodgers are projected to get in return, I don't think the Dodgers could've done better with anyone else. This definitely seals the deal on the departure of Hiroki Kuroda, and that's unfortunate but we all knew it was coming. I seriously hope Kuroda goes home to Japan at this point.
