Ackley, Ryan Have Arthroscopic Surgeries
The Mariners announced today that starting middle infielders Dustin Ackley (second base) and Brendan Ryan (shortstop) underwent arthroscopic surgeries on Thursday. The organization announced that Ackley had a bone spur removed from his left ankle, and Ryan had a bone spur removed from his right elbow. The team fully expects both players to be completely healthy for spring training.
Brendan Ryan, perhaps the most ferocious defensive player in baseball, enjoyed a superb season on the field. In 1170.2 innings Ryan only made nine errors, while being involved in 104 double plays, making 196 putouts, and 396 assists. Ryan finished the season with a .985 fielding percentage and is considered a contender for the American League Gold Glove Award for Shortstops.
Despite poor offensive numbers including a .194 batting average, 31 RBIs, and just 25 extra-base hits in 407 at-bats, Ryan put up career highs in walks (44), sacrifice flies (five), and games played (141).
Ackley, the number two overall draft pick in the 2009 draft, struggled in his first season as an everyday starter. In 153 games and 607 at-bats Ackley led the team with 84 runs scored, 137 hits, and 59 walks. Ackley also had 22 doubles, 50 RBIs, 13 stolen bases, a .622 OPS, and a pair of triples. The second-baseman’s struggles were evident this season as his batting average ended up finishing at .226 and his strikeout total concluded at 124.
Both players are expected to return to the organization next season.
