In a very under-the-radar move just over two weeks ago, the Phillies signed outfielder Jason Pridie to a minor-league contract. Like many of you, I only vaguely knew of Pridie due to his time spent with the New York Mets last year. The next we heard of Pridie (if we were even paying attention at all) he was being suspended 50 games for a drug violation while in camp with the Oakland Athletics. Upon the completion of his suspension, Pridie asked for and received his release from the Athletics when also-suspended Manny Ramirez was taking the roster spot he would otherwise occupy. The Phillies gave him a chance just over two weeks ago.
Just on Thursday, Marcus Hayes of the Daily News wrote about the clean start Pridie was getting with the Phillies. Pridie reflected to him just how grateful he was for another chance, after being suspended for a "drug of abuse":
"I realize how quickly things can be taken away, for dumb things. Ho...

Howard’s Absence Has Killed the Myth
Ryan Howard hadn’t run the bases in a competitive situation until arriving in Lakewood on Thursday. He hadn’t hit in a game that counted. Until Friday, he hadn’t fielded at game speed.
That the Phillies chose to allow Howard to play first base one night after he made his rehab debut was a positive sign. Howard in his postgame press conference Thursday said repeatedly that...
Cole Hamels Placed on Trading Block
Jon Heyman of CBSsports.com is reporting that Cole Hamels has been placed not he trading block and the Phillies are actively looking for trade offers for the pending free agent.
Hamels and the Phillies have not been able to reach a long term deal, and Philedelphia’s struggles this season has apparently made them sellers at the trade deadline.
At 36-44 on the season, the Phillies...
Thoughts On Howard, All-Stars, Trades, and a Pujols Signing
I got a chance to see Ryan Howard's rehab, first hand tonight in Allentown. The IronPigs won the game 2-1, sweeping the double-header from Pawtucket to go two games up in the division after the day. Ryne Sandberg's crew won both games without using a starting pitcher. Not bad. Sandberg's upbeat about Howard and Utley. But you want to read about Ryan Howard. Here'...
Phillies are Reportedly Shopping Jim Thome; Trade Him ONLY if He Wants
Yesterday, ESPN's Jayson Stark reported that the Phillies may trade Jim Thome to an American League team, who can use him more appropriately as a designated hitter:
The Philadelphia Phillies are quietly making Jim Thome available to American League teams looking for a designated hitter, executives of two AL clubs said Thursday."
We all knew when the Phillies signed...
Ryan Howard Rehab Notes & Quotes
Ryan Howard continued to test his recovering Achilles tendon as he rehabbed for the second time in as many nights with the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws on Friday. The 32-year-old slugger has been sidelined following off-season surgery to repair the tendon he ruptured in the final at bat of the Phillies’ 2011 postseason.
In game action on Friday, facing highly regarded Nationals...
Philadelphia Phillies: 2012 ERA for the MLB 5 at game 79
Cliff Lee of the Philadelphia Phillies is among the best pitchers in the majors. What west coast hurlers are in that group? The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my daily coverage.
TAL’S HANDY STATS
WELCOME, NEWCOMERS:
I am alternating a game-day 2012 ERA For The NL East and a 2012 ERA For The MLB 5. See link section below. In each publication, the number after the title will...
Phillies Prospects Making All-Star Games
There won't be as many Phillies in the mid-summer's class as there have been in recent years. This is a product of being in last place 78 games into the season. While we'll only have a couple in San Diego, the Phillies affiliates in the minor leagues will be represented- and even host an All-Star game. Ryne Sandberg will take a couple of his IronPigs to the AAA All...
Baseball Talk Philadelphia: Friday Fan Rant
Tom Van Leer leads off with a lot to say:
Dear Baseball Talk: Philadelphia
Where do I start. It is hard to believe this team. Just when our Offence is starting to get in motion our bullpen continues to be mediocre. Last night the team, the fans, and the city was the happiest its been since Opening Day. Chase is back, we hear Ryan Howard is starting rehab, and Chooch is the...
Oriole Acquire Jim Thome; Is Dan Duquette All In?
The Orioles acquired legendary slugger Jim Thome from the Phillies yesterday for a couple of minor league prospects. My first thought was, "Can he pitch?"There are lots of ramifications to this trade so let's take them one at a time. First, let's look at who the Orioles acquired. Unlike the Vladimir Guerrero debacle of 2011, Thome's skills include the ability...
Phillies Put Cole Hamels On Trade Block
(Photo: Philliedelphia/Steve Trapani)
Well I guess the Phillies are sellers this year.
According to CBS' Jon Heyman, the Phillies have begun to call other Major League teams regarding trade interest in lefthander Cole Hamels.
Hamels, 28, is in his last year of his contract with the Phillies and if he is not traded or not re-signed by the end of the year it is going to...
Ruben Amaro Arranges Unicorn Ride, Trades Chad Qualls to the Yankees
UNREAL: A TEAM ACTUALLY TOOK CHAD QUALLS OFF OF THE PHILLIES HANDS! The New York Yankees of all teams took Qualls off of the Phillies hands' for a player to be named later or cash.
That means the stupid Yankees are paying the rest of Qualls' $1.1 million salary, which means the Phillies can use that money to add a real reliever or add a sculpture that's as good as...
Cole Hamels Seeking First Win Against Marlins This Season
Well last night wasn't the start we were looking for. Cliff Lee was lit up for six earned and the Phils only produced two runs themselves. It wasn't a good game at all, and for Cliff Lee it hasn't been a good season at all. The Marlins now hold a 4-3 record against the Phillies this year, as well as sitting 2 1/2 games ahead of them in the divison standings. This afternoon...
Phillies Trade Jim Thome To Orioles For Pair Of Prospects
The Baltimore Orioles are reporting that they have acquired veteran slugger Jim Thome from the Philadelphia Phillies for two minor league players; pitcher Kyle Simon and catcher Gabriel Lino, both Single-A prospects.
Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com first reported that both teams were in negotiations for Thome.
Thome, 41, was posted a .242/.338/.516 slash with five homers...
Rangers have scouted Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels
By Anthony Caruso III
The Capital Sports Report
Owner/Managing Editor/Sr. Writer
The Philadelphia Phillies put star pitcher Cole Hamels on the market earlier.
Now, it has come to light that the Texas Rangers are scouting Hamels. Hamels will be a free agent after this season.
The Rangers would pick up an ace in Hamels. And he would immediately compete with Matt Harrison as the ace...
Orioles acquire Jim Thome from Phillies
Jim Thome is heading back to the American League where he belongs. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports just reported that the Phillies had traded the DH (who couldn't DH with the Phillies aside from interleague play) to the Orioles. The deal will be officially announced after both teams finish their games this afternoon, and there's no word on who the Orioles have given up in...
