Southpaw Jose Quintana held up his part of the bargain. Well, at least he continued to give Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura some serious thinking to do.

The rookie left-hander went 5 1/3 innings Tuesday in the White Sox's 6-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, allowing one run on 10 hits and no walks while fanning four.

The outing lowered Quintana's season ERA to 1.98 after his sixth appearance and third start.

Considering that both Gavin Floyd and Philip Humber are in slumps, and were put on warning by Ventura after Sunday's loss, Quintana might be staying in the rotation longer than expected. He was supposed to be pushed out as soon as John Danks returned from the 15-day disabled list, and that could be happening sooner than later.

On the same night that Quintana beat the Cardinals in St. Louis, Danks made his first rehab start with Class AAA Charlotte, allowing three runs (one earned) in four innings.

Danks, who was the Opening Day starter for the Sox, gave up four hits and one walk while fanning one. He has been sidelined since May 20 with soreness in the back of his pitching shoulder.

"I heard he feels fine," Ventura said of Danks' outing. "It's a step in the right direction, so keep going."

Danks threw 61 pitches, 34 for strikes, in his start at Columbus, Ohio.

What still isn't decided is whether Danks, who signed a $65 million extension in the offseason, will get another rehab start or if he'll be back up this weekend to pitch for the White Sox at Dodger Stadium.

"I'd like him to have one more (rehab start) to make sure, and not make it a nine-inning, knock-down, drag-out," Ventura said. "It's more about how he's feeling."

If that is the case, Quintana will make one more start before Ventura has some serious decisions to make.
