The Tampa Bay Rays have been playing for their postseason lives on a game-to-game basis since Sunday in Toronto.  Having a five game series with the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series should come as a relief. Of course, these two teams are no strangers to each other as they battled 19 times with the Red Sox winning the season series, 12-7. Those 12 wins were part of an American League best 97 on the season which was earned the Red Sox the AL East division crown. Thanks to the American League’s victory in the All-Star game the Red Sox have home field advantage in every series they are a part of this postseason. Boston’s resurgence this season involved a thorough off season makeover.  Gone was manager Bobby Valentine who was replaced by AL Manager Of the Year candidate John Farrell.  Farrell is a former Red Sox pitcher and pitching coach who spent the last two seasons as the Toronto Blue Jays manager. Instead of spending lavishly on the free agent market the Red Sox were prudent and targeted players who could contribute on and off the field.  They signed outfielders Shane Victorino and Jonny Gomes, catcher David Ross, first baseman Mike Napoli and shortstop Steven Drew. It is almost as if the Red Sox copied how the Rays put together their roster every year.  Tampa Bay will never be able to compete dollar for dollar with the big money franchises in their division.  They developed their own way to compete in the AL East. First, the Rays draft and develop players from within the organization, especially starting pitching.   Then sign modestly priced free agents who will come in and contribute on the field and in the clubhouse.  No manager keeps his club as loose as Rays manager Joe Madden. Game 1 will feature Matt Moore(17-4, 3.29 ERA) for the Rays versus Jon Lester(15-8, 3.75 ERA) for the Red Sox.  Tampa’s ace David Price(10-8, 3.33 ERA) will face John Lackey(10-13, 3.52 ERA) of the Red Sox in game 2.  Lackey has been extremely tough at home for the Sox this season.  Game 3 in Tampa will pit Alex Cobb(12-3, 2.64 ERA) against Clay Buchholz(12-1, 1.74 ERA). The Red Sox got the better of the rays in the regular season and that will continue in the ALDS.  Boston will end the Rays season in four games.     The post ALDS: Boston Looks to Sox Rays appeared first on UTSN - The Universal Takeover Sports Network.

A Disgusting Jerk Fan Threw His Dip Spit At David DeJesus Last Night

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder David DeJesus was lucky some idiotic fan sitting down the left field line had terrible aim last night, otherwise DeJesus would have been covered in nasty tobacco juice. Immediately after recording the second out of the eighth inning in Cleveland last night night, DeJesus had a makeshift spittoon hurled in his direction by a nearby fan. Fortunately, the spitter...

David Ortiz Looking Loose for Playoffs With Fenway Park Videobomb of Tom Caron, Rob Bradford (Video)

David Ortiz looks like he’s adopted some Shane Victorino walk-up music, ’cause he’s not worrying about a thing as the Red Sox prepare for their American League Division Series. Ortiz and the rest of the Sox were at Fenway Park on Wednesday to get some work in, including a simulated game. Ortiz wasn’t content to just practice his baseball skills, though. When Tom Caron and...

Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays ALDS Preview

While it is only the divisional series, it’s still extremely fitting that the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays are set to meet up in the playoffs, isn’t it? After all these two division rivals met 19 times this season as they dueled for the number one spot in the American League East. But while the Red Sox did end up winning the season series, 12-7, this has the makings of a...

David Price allows 7 runs, Rays fall to Red Sox in Game 2

BOSTON (AP) -- David Ortiz homered twice, the second shot chasing David Price in the eighth inning on Saturday night, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 to take a 2-0 lead in the AL division series. It was the first two-homer postseason game for the Red Sox designated hitter. Ortiz was a star for the 2004 Boston team that won the franchise's first World Series...

John Lackey ‘Fired Up’ About Pitching Game 2, Has No Plans to Suppress Emotions on Mound

BOSTON — Most pitchers look to keep their emotions in check while on the mound. John Lackey is not most pitchers. Lackey, who is often animated while toeing the rubber, said Friday that he’ll continue to be the same pitcher he’s always been when he takes the mound for Game 2 of the ALDS on Saturday. The veteran has no plans to chill out with the stakes raised. “No, I’m...

David Ortiz Launches Two Home Runs, Red Sox Offense Comes Up Big Again in Best Images From Game 2 of ALDS (Photos)

The Red Sox bats exploded for 12 runs in Game 1 of the ALDS, and Game 2 at Fenway Park provided another stellar offensive performance from the home team. David Ortiz went yard twice, eight out of the starting nine recorded a hit and Jacoby Ellsbury finished the day with three hits and three runs. The Red Sox will now take a commanding two-game lead down to Tampa for Game 3 on Monday...

Jon Lester Dazzles in Game 1 of ALDS, Looks Like Man on Mission After Playoff Layoff

BOSTON — Four years make the heart grow fonder — and the arm grown stronger, apparently. Jon Lester came out firing Friday in the first playoff game at Fenway Park since 2009. The veteran showed power, precision and poise while leading the Red Sox to a 12-2 victory over the Rays in Game 1 of the ALDS. “Obviously, getting to start Game 1 at Fenway Park is pretty exciting,...

Bobby Valentine Has Kind Words for Red Sox

I know, I know. Another Bobby V story. Not that anyone cares, but Valentine has had things looking up for him lately. The Sacred Heart University Athletic Director's football team is 5-0 and he has two film projects out, which I doubt any Red Sox fans would touch with a ten-foot pole. Good for you Bobby, but you know what would be better than all that right now? Being John Farrell...

Why the Fan Base of the Tampa Bay Rays Gets Harsh Judgment

They say that life isn’t fair, so get used to it, but there’s times when that cold splash of reality in such a neat package isn’t enough. Being critical isn’t something that is fun (although snark is often the soup de jour these days). Such is the case when it comes to my view of the Tampa Bay Rays fan base. I have been critical of them (but I don’t hold all fans to the...

Red Sox’ Relentless Offense Delivers Knockout Blow in Game 1 After Major Miscue Backs Rays Into Corner

BOSTON — The Rays gave the Red Sox an inch. Boston took a mile. The Red Sox found themselves in a 2-0 hole Friday after Sean Rodriguez and Ben Zobrist smacked a pair of solo homers off Jon Lester. A strange play in the fourth inning opened the door for the Red Sox’ offense, though, and Boston kept its foot on the gas en route to a 12-2 blowout victory in Game 1 of the ALDS. Matt...

Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: Stephen Drew

Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market. Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each...

Recap: Sox get to Price, up 2-0

(Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images) During the regular season Rays' starter David Price surrendered 9 earned runs over 32.2 innings pitched against Boston.  Tonight he gave up 7 in 7 innings as the Red Sox cruised to a 7-4 victory, going up 2-0 in the series. Lackey was ho-hum on the mound, but it didn't matter much because the offense stayed hot.  Everyone but Napoli...
