Alek Thomas Experiences Setback with Injured Hamstring

Diamondbacks center fielder Alek Thomas was close to returning from the injured list but suffered a setback with his injured left hamstring. Manger Torey Lovullo told reporters, including the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro, that Thomas reported discomfort in his hamstring and is headed back to Phoenix for further evaluation. The injury comes as disappointing news on the same day that closer Paul Sewald was activated from the 15-day injured list.

Alek Thomas felt more discomfort in his hamstring and is headed back to Phoenix to be reevaluated, Torey Lovullo said.

Thomas initially injured the left hamstring on March 31st against the Colorado Rockies. He was placed on the 10-day injured list the following day. He was on track to come off the IL after participating in three rehab games with Triple-A Reno over the weekend.

With Thomas on the shelf for the foreseeable future, with no timetable for a potential return, the team will continue to go with their current rotation of players. Jake McCarthy has done a great job of plugging that hole in the outfield, hitting .311 with a .758 OPS in 28 games. The team will continue to deploy McCarthy primarily in right field while Corbin Carroll mans center field.
