Around this time in 2011, the Detroit Tigers were ready to go into the season with a proven vet (newly signed) and a young kid trying to find his way in the Majors. The Tigers have not had the stability behind the plate since Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez was shipped out to the Bronx in 2008. This move was made in hopes that then-prospect Alex Avila could take over the reigns behind the plate in Detroit. It took longer then the front office staff thought, but Avila has now become the everyday catcher in 2012. This young 25-year-old catcher is coming off a 2011 campaign which saw an All-Star Game selection and Silver Slugger award.
The momentum unfortunately did not carry into the postseason. Avila only managed to muster a .073 Batting Average and showed signs of fatigue because of increased playing time.
