Just two weeks after Evan Meek was sent down to AAA Indianapolis because his velocity-less fastball had his ERA inflated to more than twice the Pirates’ average run total, the Buccos have re-called Meek. In return, they’ve shipped Alex Presley down to the minors. Either Meek found his heater in the four appearances he’s made in Indy or the Bucs think Presley has just been THAT bad. We’re not so sure about Meeker right now but to be fair, Presley has been exceptionally bad. Presley was supposed to be the Buccos’ speedy leadoff hitter. He’s pretty much been the opposite. He hasn’t had a hit since May 8 and he’s batting an awful .220 (still not the worst among the Bucs). He’s 10 K’s away from matching his career high of 40 that he set in only 18 more games last year. And he’s been thrown out more times than he’s successfully stolen a base. There’s no doubt he could use a little refresher course in Indy. Meek got demoted because of his 5.59 ERA (the only Bucco righty above 5.00 at

Are the Pirates Really Just One Bat Away?

The Pirates are sitting at 17-20 after two straight losses in which their pitching gave up more than five runs and their offense wasn't up to the challenge. We're all curious as to where the Pirates could go this year if they could add another bat to the lineup to help the offense. The fact is that the Pirates aren't going to be able to find a bat at this point in the...

Gorkys Hernandez recalled; Evan Meek optioned to AAA

OF Gorkys Hernandez (#62) has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and RHP Evan Meek has been optioned to Indy. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) May 18, 2012   This a pretty surprising move. We all knew that Meek was most likely going to be sent back down to AAA-Indianapolis for this weekend’s series, but Gorkys Hernandez is not a name that was being thrown around by anyone...

What You Need to Know: Friday, May 18 by Daniel Rathman

The Thursday Takeaway Pirates starter James McDonald took home his third win of the season last night, but by the time he left the mound, he had been saddled with three runs in 5 2/3 innings—an outcome that belied his dominance of the Nationals in his team’s 5-3 win. The 27-year-old righty cruised through his first five innings, pounding the zone and missing plenty of bats...

Former Buccos bury the Pirates

Remember when we used to make fun of Adam LaRoche for sucking so bad? Remember when he used to hit below .200 for the first half of the season while playing first base for the Pirates? What the hell happened? Last night, LaRoche went 3 for 4 including a homer, 4 RBIs and his 1,000th Major League hit and led the Nationals to a 7-4 win over the Buccos. Again, what the hell happened...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Detroit Tigers – Game 39

Good win against a quality opponent last night.  The Pirates finished off the season series with the Nationals, taking the it 3-2.  The Pirates were 4-4 against the Nats last season, so they had a better winning percentage this year, a definite positive considering the Nats are better than they were last year. The Pirates [...]
