Found May 09, 2012 on The "Mc" Effect:
Alex Presley got off to a fast start to the 2012 season, hitting .303 with four doubles in his first 19 games. Since then he's three for his last twenty-eight, and Clint Hurdle and company have apparently taken notice.

For the third time in the last four games, Presley is sitting the bench. This time it's Yamaico Navarro in for him. Granted, the Nationals are throwing a lefty at the Pirates, which is probably the main reason for this. Despite that it's pretty evident that the Pirates aren't too confident in Presley right now. You don't see a team bench an everyday start in three of four games without him being hurt or sick.

I'm not suggesting that this has some higher meaning, it's not like Starling Marte is on his way to the big leagues soon and they're clearing a spot for him. There's also no way that the Pirates think that Nate McLouth or Yamaico Navarro are a bette option than Presley, it's just a little strange that he's getting so much time off right now.

Presley isn't your typical non-experienced major league player. This kid isn't some big time prospect that is settling into a long career in the majors. He's 26 years old and came basically out of nowhere. Presley's future with the Pirates isn't something that is set in stone, I wouldn't be surprised at all to not see him in a Pirates uniform again after this year. However, he's certainly a big part of this team this year.

After tonight, Presley should be in there everyday regardless of who is on the mound. Hopefully he'll get out of this slump, but for now Jose Tabata and Neil Walker are doing a nice job holding down the top of the lineup.

Pittsburgh closer Hanrahan on bereavement list

The Pirates have placed closer Joel Hanrahan on the bereavement list and recalled reliever Daniel McCutchen from Triple-A Indianapolis. Hanrahan left the team to be with his family following the death of his grandmother. He is expected to return to the Pirates on Sunday. Manager Clint Hurdle says he's not sure who would serve as the team's closer in place of Hanrahan. Juan...

Pirates P Erik Bedard pulled due to back spasms

Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard left Wednesday night's game against Washington in the second inning due to back spasms. Bedard grimaced after his third pitch to Washington's Adam LaRoche in the top of the second. He spent several moments stretching for manager Clint Hurdle before being replaced by Brad Lincoln. Bedard threw just eight pitches in all. ...

Barajas saves his life with a walk-off homer

AJ Burnett made it pretty obvious last night that he doesn’t want the Pirates to throw him in the trash the way the Yankees did after he gave up 12 runs in less than three innings in his last start. Well, it was pretty hard not to forgive the guy after he pitched eight innings against the Nationals last night and struck out while just giving up two runs in the Buccos 5-4 win....

Game 30: Pirates 4 Nationals 2

When a team signs a player to a six-year/$52 million contract, you hope that there are a number of reasons why they thought that player deserved the money. I spent some time this winter listing the reasons why I think Andrew McCutchen is worth that kind of money to the Pirates, but really, you'd only have to watch Wednesday night's game to understand the sort of effect he...

Pirates Against Big Name Pitchers

The Pittsburgh Pirates haven't exactly been an offensive juggernaut the last few years. Things are getting better, but their volume of work is unimpressive to say the least. Tonight we face Stephen Strasburg, which got me wondering how the Pirates have faired against big name pitchers in the last season. Let's check it out. 4/10/12 vs. Clayton Kershaw - Lose 2-1 - Kershaw...

Strasburg vs. Correia ... this is a bit of a mismatch

The Pirates are gunning for their first three-game sweep of the season tonight against the Nationals, but they've drawn an awfully difficult task if they're planning on actually pulling it off. The Nats are sending Stephen Strasburg to the mound tonight, and it seems to me that the Pirates' lineup is more or less full of sitting ducks for the righty. Strasburg isn'...

Game 31: Nationals 4 Pirates 2

If the theme of Tuesday's recap was the impossible complexity of baseball and how it creates games that can be both possible and implausible in one fell stroke, the lesson from the last game of this Pirates/Nats series is that sometimes baseball is incredibly easy to figure out. In Wednesday's game, Kevin Correia pitched a great game on the Kevin Correia scale of possible...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Washington Nationals – Game 31

First off let me just end my condolences to Joel Hanrahan on the loss of his grandmother. Last night was exactly the type of game I wouldn’t expect the Pirates to win.  Usually.  Even though I was worried about Bedard though for some reason it just seemed like the Pirates would pull it out.  Probably [...]

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Washington Nationals – Game 30

Before we get started I would be doing you, my loyal readers, a disservice if I didn’t at least bring this up. Couldn’t happen to a bigger group of scumbags. So last night’s baseball game was kinda exciting huh?  How about that freaking Rod Barajas jacking the game winner?  I will take some credit for [...]
