Presley has been playing in AAA for Indianapolis, where he was hitting .357 through seven games, with two doubles,a homer and six runs scored. Irwin started yesterday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, going 4.2 innings in the come-from-behind 10-7 win. He allowed five runs(four earned) on six hits and four walks, while striking out four batters. It was the major league debut for Irwin, who picked up the no-decision.
Presley has played parts of three seasons in the majors with the Pirates. Last year, he hit .237 in 104 games, with ten homers, nine steals and a .683 OPS. He will be available for tonight’s game in Pittsburgh against the St Louis Cardinals.

Phil Irwin will make his major league debut today.
Phil Irwin is set to make his major league debut today, getting the spot start in place of Wandy Rodriguez. Irwin hasn’t been talked about as much as top guys like Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon, mostly because he was a 21st round pick and has kind of flown under the radar in the minors. His numbers last year were excellent, but...
The #Pirates option RHP Phil Irwin to AAA Indianapolis and recall OF Alex Presley.
— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 15, 2013
As expected, the Pirates sent Phil Irwin back to Triple-A after yesterday’s spot start. I would not be surprised to see him back (and would still prefer him over Jonathan Sanchez, probably), but Irwin could probably benefit from some more time in the...
The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled right-hander Phil Irwin from Class AAA Indianapolis on Sunday and he was set to make his major-league debut by starting against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Pirates optioned infielder/outfielder Josh Harrison to Indianapolis to clear room on the roster for Irwin.
Irwin, 26, won his only start with Indianapolis this season, allowing one run in six innings...

Phil Irwin is officially today’s starter.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled Phil Irwin from Triple-A, and have optioned Josh Harrison to Triple-A. They’ve also officially announced Irwin as today’s starter.
Since Irwin is a spot starter, I’d expect him to go back down after the game, with a position player coming up to replace Harrison on the bench. That position player...
Phil Irwin will make his major league debut today for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the club announced this morning. Irwin won 29 games in five seasons of minor league competition, and while wins and losses are not necisarily a good barometer for the developmental process in the minors, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Irwin’s presence made his teammates better which translated to success...
After a fairly improbable win last night that required a Johnny Cueto injury and a million or so Reds left on base, the Pirates have a chance to sweep the Reds this afternoon. They're going to have to do it with a pitcher making his big league debut, as Phil Irwin's been called up to make Wandy Rodriguez's start as Wandy recovers from his hamstring injury. I talked about...

Cardinals (7-5) at Pirates (6-6)
7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh
We’re only twelve games in to the year, of course, but hey – there’s a top-tier NL Central showdown this week at PNC! The Cardinals sit in first place and the Bucs are a game behind in second. St. Louis has not changed a whole lot from its Wild Card team last season and is off to a pretty...
WOW. We’ve got an early candidate for the best win of the season. The Pirates worked their way out of a 5-0 hole in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon to complete a sweep the hated Cincinnati Reds. That is awesome.
Phil Irwin‘s major league debut didn’t go too well. He was visibly nervous and rattled in the first two innings, struggling with his control (which he almost never...
Reds (5-6) at Pirates (5-6)
1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh
The Bucs go for a sweep of the Reds this afternoon, which would obviously be awesome. They’ve won 4 of 5 while Cincinnati has lost 4 in a row, so momentum is on the Bucs’ side for sure. They may need it today with a tough matchup on the mound, but hey, they beat Cueto last night (well, kinda)...
Remember at the start of the year when the Pirates had a lot of starting pitching depth? Kyle McPherson had just missed out on the fifth starter role. Phil Irwin had some impressive outings in Spring Training, and looked like he could also be an early season option. Everyone hoped that Gerrit Cole’s demotion to Triple-A would only be a formality for a few weeks until he gained...
No starter has been named yet for Indianapolis today. Joely Rodriguez will be the first minor leaguer to make his third start of the year, when he goes today for West Virginia. Bradenton was able to pick up their first win of the season last night. All four games today are early afternoon starts.
