The Major League Baseball All-Star break is approaching and the St. Louis Cardinals are having a special season so far which includes a number of noteworthy performances from pitchers.  Starters Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, Shelby Miller, and Jake Westbrook have all been among the league leaders in key categories at some point in the first half of the season.  Westbrook has fallen off and was sidelined with an injury for about a month, so he will not make the All-Star game, but here is a look at the other’s chances. Lance Lynn and Shelby Miller both had great starts to the 2013 season.  Lynn was 10-1 at one point and Miller was top 5 in the league in ERA for much of the first half.  But the rookie Miller has slowed in his last 4 starts.  Still, Miller had perhaps the best game of any pitcher in the league thus far with his performance on May 10 against the Rockies when he allowed a hit to the first batter he faced, and then was perfect retiring the next 27 he faced for a complete game shutout. Lynn, an All-Star last year, has received unbelievable run support from the Redbird offense in his starts and has taken advantage of that to be among the league leaders in wins.  However his ERA is not outstanding and he has not been as sharp as he was at the start of this year, nor as sharp as he was in the first half of last year.  His overall presence has not stood out especially compared to his teammates Miller and Wainwright. Miller and Lynn would both be viable options as All-Star selections, however there are a number of other solid candidates around the league and ultimately it would be understandable if neither made it.  If there was a spot for only one, Miller would be a better option than Lynn this year. Adam Wainwright – There is no doubt that Wainwright should be an All-Star this season, as he seems completely back from his Tommy John surgery in the spring of 2011.  With 10 wins, a top 6 ERA, the fourth most strikeouts, and the most complete games in the league heading into action Friday, the question is whether Wainwright deserves to start the All-Star game for the National League.  Wainwright stands out even among the best pitchers in the league with his astonishing walk rate.  Wainwright has yielded just 10 walks in 116 innings, just a fraction of the amount allowed by some of his competitors.  The main competition for the starting job at the midsummer classic will be Matt Harvey of the Mets, Jordan Zimmermann of the Nationals, and Patrick Corbin of Arizona, and Wainwright is the veteran of that group.  Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers and Cliff Lee of the Phillies would also be decent options, but with so little separating all of these pitchers it would be nice to see Wainwright get the starting spot. Edward Mujica – Mujica has been the surprise of the Cardinals’ season, filling the closer role which was vacated when Jason Motte got injured.  Mujica has been fantastic going a perfect 21 for 21 in save opportunities and stabilizing the St. Louis bullpen.  If Mujica had not stepped up, it is doubtful that the Cardinals would be having such a successful season thus far.  Mujica has been just as good as any closer in the NL this year, so he should be included in the All-Star game.

Preview: Cardinals turn to Wainwright in Oakland

The St. Louis Cardinals have boasted baseball's best starting rotation this season. But lately, it's buckled, along with the Cardinals' NL Central lead. After another uncharacteristically poor pitching performance, St. Louis will look to staff ace Adam Wainwright to right the ship Saturday against the Oakland Athletics. The Cardinals starters' ERA of 3.14 this...

St. Louis Cardinals reliever Joe Kelly shows off some sweet dance moves (video)

If a pitcher is not actually behind the netting and throwing a live session of batting practice and he isn’t pitching on the side, there really isn’t much for him to do. McNeal: Cardinals coming back to earth after red-hot start

ST. LOUIS -- For a team coming off a 13-run outburst at Houston on Tuesday, the Cardinals looked more like a team heading for a slump on Wednesday. The eighth inning was particularly troubling. After Carlos Beltran drew a one-out walk with St. Louis down 4-3, Allen Craig and Matt Holliday both struck out against Astros rookie Jose Cisnero. When Craig took strike three, he stood...

St. Louis Cardinals have big opportunity with new Hall of Fame

As the St. Louis Cardinals pursue their 12th championship in 2013 on the field of the latest version of Busch Stadium, the site of the previous ballpark is undergoing a transformation from a vacant lot to what should be a vibrant home for Cardinals fans to celebrate, as well as learn about the franchise’s impressive history. Seven years after the Cardinals moved into the new stadium...

Matt Carpenter should be the NL All-Star second baseman

A high-powered engine is not all that useful without a good starter. And the St. Louis Cardinals are that high-powered engine and the starter is Matt Carpenter. Not only is he getting on base at a .396 pace that allows him to be the third highest run-scorer in baseball, but he has solidified a position that has been a Cardinal weakness for a decade. His consistent on-base skills...

Series Preview: A's winning the unconventional way

ST. LOUIS - Over their past 162 games, only one team in the majors has won 100 games. It's not the Cardinals. It's the team the Cardinals are facing this weekend. That's right. The Athletics' 100-62 record since last July 2 is the best in the majors (The Cardinals, at 95-66, are tied for the fourth-best). The A's can't be accused of buying success on the...

Thank You Oakland & The Friday Links

The city of Oakland has been kind to St. Louis over the years. In fact, we probably should send them a Edible Arrangement.  They didn't pay Tony LaRussa after the 1995 season, clearing the way for him to start managing the Cardinals the following year and for the next 16 including 3 World Series'. (BTW, this included TLR's loyal partner Dave Duncan too.) They...

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Oakland A’s series preview

The St. Louis Cardinals need something good to happen and turn their fortunes around. After a two-game series split against Houston following a sweep by the Rangers, the Birds turn their attention toward Oakland. On Friday, Shelby Miller goes up against righty Bartolo Colon. This Oakland pitcher is having a fantastic year. He’s 10-2 with a 2.93 ERA. He’s 3-0 in his last 3 starts...

Parker Injured, A’s Fall to Cards

Jarrod Parker came into the game having allowed just 11 runs over his past six starts (4-0), and was on a roll again Saturday afternoon, allowing just two hits into the fourth inning before falling off the mound and grabbing his right hamstring in agony, and leaving the game. It was seemingly turning into a pitcher’s duel with St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright matching zeros with Parker...
