ST. LOUIS The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have recalled infielderoutfielder Allen Craig from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Memphis (AAA) and activated him from the 15-day disabled list for tonights series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
To make room for Craig on the teams 25-man active roster, the Cardinals have designated outfielder Erik Komatsu for assignment. Komatsu, 24, was a Rule 5 selection by the team last December.
Craig, 27, was sidelined from the beginning of the season as he continued recovery from right knee surgery that took place last off-season.
The right-handed hitting Craig hit a pair of homers last night for Memphis while playing first base and completed his rehab assignment with the Triple-A team by batting .353 (6-for-17) with 7 RBI in four games. He batted .364 (4-for-11) with a homer and RBI in three games at Palm Beach (A) prior to his transfer to Memphis.
Craig batted .315 with 11 homers and 40 RBI in 75 games for the Cardinals last season and he added four home runs (three in the World Series) during last seasons postseason, capping it all off by catching the final out of World Series Game 7.

ST. LOUIS Slumping outfielder Carlos Beltran walked off the field after batting practice Wednesday and stopped to tell reporters how he felt lost at the plate.
He also had a prediction.
"Sooner or later it will change," Beltran said. "There's nothing to worry about."
About four hours later, Beltran proved himself to be right. The veteran went 4-for-5,...
Reporter Julie Tristan is becoming known this across the country, and it’s not for a good reason. The host of KSDK’s “Show Me St. Louis!” did a feature last week on Cardinals third baseman David Freese riding the new Mr. Freeze ride at Six Flags St. Louis. For some reason, Tristan took the opportunity to shamelessly hit on the the ballplayer repeatedly.
I don’t know David...
NOT IN THE CARDS
I’ll admit that 2011 World Series MVP, Cardinals third baseman, David Freese isn’t an ugly-looking dude. But to the Julie Tristan, the host of KSDK’s “Show me St. Louis”, Freese is Brad Pitt, David Beckham and puppies all wrapped in one. Tristan did some fluff segment on a new ride at Six Flags St. Louis called Mr. Freeze.
For some reason, Tristan took her interview...
The St. Louis Cardinals are wasting no time honoring Tony La Russa, announcing they will retire their former manager's No. 10 later this month.
La Russa retired last fall after leading the franchise to a second World Series title in his 16 seasons. He left the game ranked third all time in managerial victories, trailing Connie Mack and John McGraw.
The jersey will be retired...
ST. LOUIS Lance Lynn may not be Chris Carpenter, but he's pitching about as good as the former Cy Young winner ever has.
Lynn continued a remarkable start to the year Wednesday night, becoming the first National League pitcher to reach five wins with 6 23 strong innings in the Cardinals 12-3 romp of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Moved to the rotation because of a nerve injury to...
The cliche about a train wreck being something that’s awful to look at, but yet you still can’t turn your head away…well the video that follows is like Amtrak’s entire fleet (I know fleets are for boats, but what is a large group of trains called?) being destroyed. David Freese of the St. Louis Cardinals clearly doesn’t want to be here. You can see just how uncomfortable...
The St. Louis Cardinals have started taking batting practice early to avoid late-afternoon shadows.
Manager Mike Matheny said Wednesday that players can get a better read on the ball and get comfortable with their swing if the visibility is better. So the team began its hitting drills more than three hours before playing the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Lance Berkman, on the 15-day disabled...
Back in February I discussed St Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse, and how his ability to command his curve ball might define his season. Lohse just finished April 4-0 for the Cardinals; how is his curve ball working for him?
Through five starts Lohse’s velocity on all his pitches is within .5 MPH of what he was throwing last year, except with his change-up; interestingly that’s...
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Adam Wainwright worked seven solid innings for his first win since September 2010, and the St. Louis Cardinals got big nights at the plate from David Freese and Matt Holliday to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-7 on Tuesday.
Freese's sixth home run and third in five games was a tiebreaking, three-run shot off Charlie Morton (1-2) in the fifth. Holliday homered...

ESPN Stats and Info recently tweeted this. Carlos Beltran with 2 HR and a career-high 7 RBI vs #Pirates … in 1st 3 innings of game. — ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) May 3, 2012 This significance of this is that Beltran was brought into St. Louis to replace Albert Pujols. That’s currently two more
After last night's offensive outburst, the New Lumber Company moves on to St. Louis to take on Adam Wainwright. Wainwright got off to an awful start this year in his return from Tommy John surgery, but he was pretty excellent in his last start against the Cubs. The Bucs will counter with Charlie Morton, who's already seen the Cardinals once this year. The Cardinals mostly...
(AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals' Adam Wainwright enjoyed his best outing of the season last week, but that wasn't enough to give him his first win since returning from Tommy John surgery.
The right-hander will get another chance Tuesday night when the Cardinals continue their lengthy stretch against NL Central foes in the opener a three-game series with the visiting Pittsburgh...
Pirates (10-13) at Cardinals (15-8)

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

The Pirates will need to be a lot better on the mound and in the field if they want to turn this series around and defeat the first-place Cardinals. St. Louis leads the Central and currently holds a 5-game advantage over the Bucs, so it’s crucial for them to at...
